Next Sunday (14th) we have our Mass for the Sick with Anointing at 3pm.  The Old Testament (Isaiah) and Gospel (Luke) today remind us that God is concerned with the health of his people- body, mind and spirit.  He wants our well-being so that his image may be more clearly seen in us.

Today’s gospel has Jesus preparing for this healing and teaching mission by sending out advance parties to prepare his way.

Many thanks to parishioners who are working so hard for this Mass- especially Madeleine Howell – transport and Peter Benson and SVP for the tea and entertainment.  We are looking forward to welcoming our home communicants to this Mass- and anyone who would like the Sacrament of the Sick.

In two weeks time we have our Fun Run !! (Sunday July 21st).  Please take part!

This is just a pleasant 5 km run (or jog or even walk) - great fun and also a way to raise some funds (please get sponsors.) BUT PLEASE COMMIT TODAY.  Very poor response so far-we must know who is running on the day. Forms available after Mass.   We need at least 80 runners.  The event will be followed by our annual parish picnic and barbecue in the garden. Let’s make this a really great day for our whole community.

Next year (2014) we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the parish of St James the Great, Petts Wood. Archbishop Peter  will be with us at the 11 am Mass on Sunday July 13th 2014, and already plans are under way for an exhibition/experience , in church, on the life of St James, our patron saint. More details soon, but we hope to make the summer of 2014 a really celebratory time for our parish community.  Ideas, please !!

Today (Sunday 11am) we welcome, through Holy Baptism, Ethan James Cunningham (1yr), his parents Laura and Terry, and godparent Dolores Flynn.

Next Sunday 2nd collection for the Parish Buildings Fund (i.e. maintenance fund.)  The hall toilets will be completely refurbished with work starting at the end of this month – thanks to everyone who has given so generously. There is much to do but we have achieved much-thank you again.

We aim to replace the sound system in the church at the cost of c.£5,000. A parishioner has generously pledged £1,000 towards this. If anyone else would like to support this specific project please let me know. The new system will have radio mics, and also facilities for playing music.

Traidcraft goods will be on sale after all Masses next weekend. You always give great support to this and I am sure you will again.

Also next Sunday (14th) meeting for young people (school year 9 and above) who are thinking of confirmation next year (7pm-8pm, in the hall). This will be an important meeting- we need to see who is ‘on board.’

Many thanks to those who helped with the hedge cutting yesterday! And to the cleaners.)  Next Saturday’s cleaners are parents of school year 7 (10.30am-11.30am).

There will be NO evening Mass on Tuesday this week or on the 16th.

If you are going away during the summer make sure you know where to find Sunday Mass (and also the Assumption – Thursday August 15th- a Holy Day of Obligation.)  I am always happy to advise - so please ask!  We also have a page on our website to get you started.

Thursday this week is the feast of St.Benedict  (480-547)  patron of Europe – founder of western monasticism and a great influence on English Christianity in the moderation of his ‘Rule’ (the charter for running a monastery.) Read it sometime- it is a document, which has much to say to our time, our society and our personal lives. (‘The Rule of St.Benedict.’)

Have a good week.

Fr.Bryan.
