We had a breakthrough with this action in November 2013, but it took quite a while to complete and has not been without its problems!
Various members of the parish had been collecting material for recycling for some time but disposal was a problem, resulting in some people taking it home to put in their domestic collections. The Cubs had always taken an interest and set up a system with improvised discard bins. It wasn't alway reliable but they did their best.
Then a chance conversation with the very helpful council Waste Services Manager led to him agreeing to supply wheelie bins for the kerbside collection of mixed recyclables and paper/card. Apparently, churches in our area are not normally given free collection facilities so we were delighted. He then agreed to supply us with a food waste kerbside collection bin and caddies for the hall kitchen. Sadly, it was then noticed that we have a commercially run Pre-School operating in the hall, so we had to give an undertaking that they would not use the bins! This complicated things and slowed us down.
Neverthless the scheme is up and running thanks once again to the enthusiasm of our Cubs. The LiveSimply Group acquired a new set of discard bins, after carrying out a survey of requirements, paid for out of parish funds, and the Cubs took on the job of designing posters to inform hall users of what could go in each. They then gave a splendid talk on the scheme at Parade Mass. The lady who cleans the hall kindly agreed to empty the discard bins as necessary.
The Cubs hope to extend the scheme in due course to collect bottle tops (for a French charity supplying wheelchairs) and ring pulls.
