Guides LiveSimply Lenten Lunch
13th April 2014
The parish was invited, by the 3rd Petts Wood (St James') Guides, to a simple lunch after 11.00am Mass on Palm Sunday. This was part of LiveSimply and an appropriate start to Holy Week. Over 50 people of all ages attended and were provided with home made vegetable soup and home made bread. 10 Guides and several mums ran the kitchen and served at table.
A video describing CAFOD's Connect2 project for the village of Kainmari in Bangladesh was shown because St James' parishioners had supported this in 2013. In Guide Molly Crudgington's welcome, guests were told that 1 in 8 of the world's population were hungry. Molly said we should remember that when we felt our tummies rumbling later in the afternoon.
The CAFOD Lent Fast Day film was then shown as an introduction to Father Bryan's reflection about our Lenten meal. This concluded with everyone saying the prayer on the Lent Fast Day prayer card. Soup and bread were then served by the Guides.
After eating the delicious soup the guests watched a film called One Day One World about a day in the life of a boy in England and a girl in Bangladesh. The event closed with the Lent Fast Day film which tells Mohammed's story and the difficulties faced by families in Sierra Leone.
Look at the pictures and you will see what a happy meal it was despite the frugal menu! Special thanks are due to Guide Leaders Julia Crudgington and Wendy Brand who worked hard to make this event such a success. The Guides were able to send £80 each to charities "Mary's Meals" and "Demelza House".
