The fourth session of site clearance took place on Saturday 21st September. With the exertions of stump removal a distant memory, the small but enthusiastic team were ready for a slightly less arduous morning. It was just a question of forking and sifting through the mixture of soil and compost, and levelling the site. How wrong we were! The job was made much more difficult by the presence of buried bin liners, slabs and even ironwork. Several huge paving slabs were excavated from at least 30cm below the surface. The black bags contained everything from leaves, twigs, sweet wrappers and plastic bottles to general rubbish. It is surprisingly difficult to extricate partially degraded bin liners, so please be warned - empty them first! One of the biggest obstacles to progress was a large iron frame which the team decided might have been the base of an old votive candle stand. If anyone can identify it from one of the photos below then please let us know. But there was also good fortune, almost serendipity, when the toilet contractor agreed to us dumping several barrowloads of rubbish in their skip. Thank you Blackwater Building Services.
