A warm welcome to everyone as we begin the new church year today.  The Sunday gospel readings for the next year will be from St Mark (Year B) – the earliest of the four gospels (about 65AD – 30 years or so after the crucifixion).  It was written in Rome when the Church was being fiercely persecuted and its future uncertain.  St Mark encourages Christians to maintain their faith in the risen Christ present with them, especially in the sacrament of the Eucharist.  A message, surely, for us as well.

We welcome  On Saturday at 4.15pm, through Holy Baptism, Connie Ellen Caple (4½ months), her parents Claire and Jamie and godparents Natalie, Shula, Daniel and Ian.

Today:            Pre-School cake sale and raffle after 10.00 and 11.30 Masses.  Do come in for coffee and support the pre-school!

Christmas Choir practice this afternoon at 3.30pm.

Monday:         Knowing God Better’ – 5th session: “Knowing God’s Word’ at 1.30pm or 8.00pm in the Social Centre.  NB. This course will finish next Monday 8th in the Presbytery at 8.00pm.  There will be NO 1.30pm session on the 8th.  ALL who have attended both groups are most welcome to the 8.00pm session.

Saturday:       Servers Training Session 10.00-10.45am.  All servers (new & old) please attend this session (and perhaps come to Mass at 9.30am?)

St James’ Youth Group is holding a disco and karaoke evening with prizes 7.00-10.00pm (open to years 7-10).  Tickets £5 to include buffet.  NB No Youth Group on Saturday afternoon.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Saturday from 10.00-10.30am and 5.15-5.45pm.

Also on the four Sundays of Advent from 9.20am-9.50am, that is before the 10.00am Mass.  Fr Bryan and Fr Joseph will hear confessions at these times starting next Sunday 30th November (starting TODAY).

Guides Christmas Lunch - Sunday 14th December 2-4pm

Memory Awakens Hope

‘Advent is concerned with that very connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man.  Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us,

namely, the memory of the God who became a child.  This is a healing memory; it brings hope.  The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that is can discern the star of hope...

It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.’

Pope Benedict XVI

May this Advent be a time of spiritual review, a time of growth and confidence in God’s love for each one of us.

Every blessing for this coming week, Fr Bryan
