Welcome to Mass today.
The theme today is Jesus calling his first Disciples, Simon (later to be nicknamed “Peter”) and his brother Andrew. Jesus invites them to leave their old way of life (fishing) and to follow him in a new way of life (discipleship.) As we approach the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday is Wednesday week Feb 6th) we to are called to reflect on our discipleship, and to renew our commitment to Christ, to the Church, and to each other.
We welcome Luke Levon Whybrow (15 months) into the family of Christ’s Church through Holy Baptism (Sat. 4.30pm), and also his parents Nathalie and Daniel, and godparents Leigh, David and Sally.
Bach’s St John Passion – Rehearsals continue this afternoon (3.30pm) I am looking for competent string players for the orchestra (at least grade 7 / 8 standard) – please contact me if you can help or if you know of anyone who can.
MONDAY
CWL New Year Party – CWL are having a New Year Party in the Social Centre on Monday 28th January at 8.15pm. Ladies of the parish are most welcome.
Confirmation Preparation - (6.45pm – 7.45pm.) We have a wonderful group of 48 young people and 6 dedicated catechists to who I am extremely grateful. Please remember our young people in your prayers.
Journey in Faith – This continues on Mondays at 8pm (presbytery.) Any non-Catholic 18 years plus is most welcome. It may be that we start a second group – do let me know if you might be interested.
WEDNESDAY
Welcomers! - A meeting for those of you who would like to be welcomers at the Sunday Masses (Social Centre 8pm.)
SERVERS PRACTICE on Wednesday for all 10am Mass servers (only)-church 7.0.pm-8.0.pm.
St.John Passion – extra note-learning rehearsal (church-8.30pm.)
Memorial Flowers – You may like to purchase a yellow rose (£7.50) in memory of a loved one for our new Memorial Garden which will be against the church wall on Lakeswood Road (please put money, and your details on a piece of paper in the Mass Offerings safe box in the porch.)
Ash Wednesday – The first day of Lent. There will be Masses (with ashing) at 9.30am (with St James School) and at 8pm. This is a day of Fasting (moderation in eating) and Abstinence (no meat or Alcohol.) May Lent this year be a really positive time of renewal for all of us here at St James, preparing us for the central mystery of our faith, the death and resurrection of Christ at Easter.
This weekend Poverest Road Baptist Church bids farewell to their Minister, The Rev. Peter Robinson who, after 7 years in Petts Wood, is returning to his native New Zealand with his wife Carol and son Karl. Peter has been a marvellous colleague and I have valued his friendship and support over the past year. We assure him of our prayers and good wishes, and also the people of his church as they seek to appoint a successor to Peter
Prayers and good wishes also to the Rev. Israel Ukoko and the congregation of House of Faith church, which meets on Sunday afternoons in the Memorial Hall. This weekend they celebrate three years in Petts Wood.
Many thanks to those who helped with refreshments last Sunday at the Church Unity lunch. Numbers were down a little but it was a lovely occasion and greatly appreciated by everyone.
Face to Face - on Sunday February 10th the Rt. Rev. George Stack (area Bishop in Westminster Diocese) will be talking face to face with the Rev. Paul Hulme at the Methodist Church at 6.30pm. Could I please ask that we have a really good turn out from St James to support one of our Catholic bishops! The conversation will last exactly one hour and is followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet Bishop Stack.
Have a good week. Fr Bryan
