We shall celebrate the feast of ST JAMES THE GREAT – our patron saint at each Mass of the weekend 25/26th July.  We commemorate St James, apostle of Christ.  His day was actually the 25th and we had our St Jamestide picnic last Sunday (see pictures on the website).  So the colour is red.  However, we use the readings of the Sunday (17th in Ordinary Time, Year B).

Journey in Faith

A new group will begin on Monday 21st September at 8.00pm in the presbytery.  This is for non-Catholics who would like to learn about the Catholic Faith.  There will be more publicity about this at the end of August.

August is a holiday month for many people and I do hope that many of you will have a good break at some point.  The parish is slower and quieter until we resume our activities in September.  I am very grateful to Fr Arbo.

There are, however, two major feasts in August.  On Thursday 6th August we celebrate the Transfiguration of Christ – a vision and foretaste of the God’s kingdom, but also a vision of transfiguration of our world.  It is both ironic and tragic that this feast occurs on the day Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb in 1945.  As we as a species slowly learn to disarm and to trust each other, we pray for the complete transfiguration of the world and of ourselves.

And then, on Sunday 16th August we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven.  Like the transfiguration this is a vision and reminder of our final destiny.  Mary – the one closest to her Son on earth is now united with him in the glory of his kingdom, and this reminds us that we too belong with God forever.

Swine ’fluFollowing the bishop’s advice, communion will be administered in one kind only until further notice, and you are respectfully requested to receive the host in your hand (not your tongue).

Security A parishioner had a night intruder last week.  Do check your house security, windows, locks etc....

Many thanks for purchasing the CAFOD raffle tickets.  The Justice & Peace Group collected £500 and the draw will take place on 21st August.  The Teddy Bears’ picnic organised by the CWL raised about £400.

“We are a church on the move, and instrument in the hand of God, proclaiming the Good News, nurturing new converts, instruments of peace, reconciliation and justice in the hands of God.

We are the means of healing hurts, of building community, of feeding the hungry.

We are a worshipping Spirit-filled community, who know that we can do God’s work only in God’s way with God’s means.

We are God’s partners, God’s agents of transfiguration, to change the ugliness of the world – it’s hatred, it’s hostilities, it’s jealousies, it’s hunger, it’s injustice, it’s oppression, it’s loneliness, it’s rivalry, it’s grasping, it’s sickness – into their glorious counterparts.

So, there will be laughter and joy, caring and sharing, justice, reconciliation and peace, compassion.”

Archbishop Desmond Tutu – Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town – quoted by Fr Bryan in homily of 12 July 2009
