Welcome to Mass today! Christmas Season is now over and liturgically we begin ‘Ordinary Time’ –between now and the start of Lent. The colour is green symbolising our basic humanity and reminding us that we are ‘ordered’ towards God and towards each other. We are not just individuals seeking ‘my happiness’, ‘my freedom’, ‘my success.’ We need each other. Ordinary Time reminds us of this truth- as the African saying has it: ‘I am because we are.’ And this is so true of this week when we pray for the unity of Christ’s Church (18th-25th).
Today -12.40pm-short ecumenical act of worship here in St James followed by a bring and share lunch in the Social Centre for all the Petts Wood churches. A great way to share with and meet each other!
First Communion Classes for children (yr 3) at NON Catholic schools-today after communion at 10am Mass until 11.30am. Contact: Miriam Travers.
Peace and Justice Group Minutes of the last meeting available in porch, together with J and P ‘pack’ assembled by Dave McCabe. Do take a copy (one per family) and most importantly do come to the next meeting on Tues.Feb.12th at 8.0.pm when my nephew, Paul Elliston will give a presentation about Peru and its problems. He and his wife Rachel will be going to an earthquake-stricken city near Lima, as aid workers, for two years, in the near future.
Childrens’ Liturgy Group (10am Mass)This is for children (up to end of year 4) who are happy to go into the hall without their parents. The only adults present should be the designated leaders and helpers – thank you.
Wednesday – Meeting for ALL servers (7.0.pm-8.0.pm) in church. Any child who has made his/her first communion is welcome to come and join the existing servers.
Many thanks to all parishioners who assisted at the three funerals last week and also to those who gave much needed help when the drains overflowed! This (hopefully) has now been solved.
Monday 8pm Journey in Faith This is for any non-Catholic 18 years plus who might wish to learn about the Catholic Faith. We meet at 218a Crescent Drive and finish at 9.30pm promptly.
Confirmation Preparation This continues in the social centre on Mondays (6.45pm – 7.45pm). The young people have been told that they are expected to be at Mass here each weekend as well as at the Monday evening sessions.
Advance Notice – Welcomers There will be a meeting for anyone wishing to become a welcomer at 8pm on Wednesday January 30th in the Social Centre. (Contact Shelia Simon on 020 8467 9385) I do hope that a good number of you will support this and we should like to get a proper rota running for each weekend Mass. The Ministry of Welcome is a vitally important part of our Christian outreach.
Knights of St Columba Thank you for all of the used postage stamps collected during the past year. The Knights are able to help local people in need from the money raised. Keep up the good work!
St John Passion The rehearsals are going well but we need some more Tenors and Basses! Please come and sing if you are able (Sun 3.30pm – 5.00pm). –The two performances in March will be in aid of the Bromley Alzheimer’s Society.
Registration / Newcomers etc I do hope that everyone who worships here regularly has now registered officially with the Parish (forms in porch). It is really great that we have so many newcomers to our community and we are trying to arrange a social evening so that people can get to know each other – details soon. It would be really good if more people came in to coffee after Sunday Mass – a great time to chat and meet new people.
Memorial Flowers We are landscaping a memorial garden on the Lakeswood Road side of the Church and you may like to purchase a yellow rose (£7.50) in memory of a loved one. This will be a beautiful and appropriate way in which to remember our loved ones and will also add to the appearance of the Church.(please put money and your details in the Mass Offerings safe box in the porch.)
Just a reminder.... Readers/ministers/...please make sure you are ‘covered’ if you cannot manage a particular Mass- everyone should have full details of all readers/ministers.
Thought for Christian Unity Week: ‘For he is their Lord no less than ours.’ (from today’s 2nd reading 1 Cor.1,1-3).
Every blessing. Fr.Bryan.
