A warm welcome to Mass today and a special welcome to Archbishop Kevin McDonald, Archbishop of Southwark, and his Private Secretary Fr Philip Glandfield.  Archbishop Kevin will preside at 10.00am and preach at 11.30am.  We are delighted that he is with us and I hope many of you will have the chance to greet him.

In today’s gospel James and John request places of honour in the Kingdom of God.  However Jesus teaches all the disciples (including us) that those who would be great must serve- and this is why he insisted on washing his disciples feet at the Last Supper.  We are the church of Christ, not to serve our own selfish interests but to look to the interests of others and their welfare – and in doing so we find great joy

We welcome (Sat 4.30pm) Emelia Hannah Saunders (4 months), her parents Marianne and Mark, and godparents Jennifer and Dean.

Tonight at Christ Church URC Willett Way at 6.30pm there will be a presentation by the Missionary Aviation Fellowship – a network of Christians working in the aviation industry.  This is a Churches Together sponsored event and I do hope St James’ will be well represented.

Monday – Journey in Faith starting 7.30pm at 281A.  Any non Catholic is most warmly welcome.

Wednesday – Harvest Mass here in church with St James’ School at 9.30am.

The Justice and Peace Group –We had excellent talks from Yolande and Ken Wright on Tuesday 13th.  Yolande spoke of her experiences working with the International Development Agency in Cambodia .  Ken trained as a climate scientist and has recently represented the Department of Energy and Climate Change in Bangkok, where negotiators were preparing the groundwork for  Copenhagen in December.  Yolande and Ken will shortly return to Cambodia and wish them well for the coming year and look forward to their return to Bromley!

Parish Welcome Booklet.   We plan to produce an amendment sheet to bring things up to date but need to know all the details!  Would every Parish Group please review their entries  (including the Contacts List in the centre ) and advise any changes to Chris Hairs.

St James’ Primary School will celebrate its 40th anniversary during weekend of 23rd-25th April 2010, including a Mass with Bishop Pat.  More details will follow but in the meantime they are collecting memories and photos of the last 40 years.  Please email any of these to stjames@ntlworld.com or send by post to 40th Anniversary, St James’ RC Primary School, Maybury Close, Petts Wood, Orpington, BR5 1BL.

Parish visiting- I am always very pleased to visit you at home for any reason (or none!).  If you would like a visit please fill in a visit card and pop it into the Mass Intentions box on the wall in the porch.  I will then ring you to arrange a visit.

Help! Catechists needed! Many thanks to those who have enrolled but we need many more! Just to be clear –

·         no previous knowledge needed

·         helping one or two couples in baptism preparation

·         maybe helping a very small group prepare for confirmation

·         perhaps helping younger children (at non Catholic schools) prepare for first communion

·         perhaps contribute one or two sessions to the Journey in faith programme

The Catechists’ course is designed to give people confidence in all these areas and I hope a broad range of people will apply (e.g. children’s liturgy leaders, young parents etc.).  If you are questioning whether you are suitable to do this – then you probably are just what we’re looking for!  Forms in porch.  We start on 4th November with an overview of the course – perhaps come and see whether this is for you?

Every blessing for this coming week. Fr Bryan
