Confessions: Saturday at 6.50pm after the 6.00pm Mass and Monday 10.00am after the 9.30am Mass, and also by prior appointment or at call.  Exposition: Monday 10.00-11.00am.

Today is the Fifth Sunday in Eastertide

Jesus teaches us: ‘I am the vine, and you are the branches’.  A lovely image, but also a challenging one.  Sunday by Sunday, we return to the ‘vine’ to be sustained and ‘fed’ so that we may take the life of Jesus into our working week.  If we do not do this, we shall ‘wither’.  All of us, through our baptism are commissioned by Jesus to be strong, healthy ‘branches’, to bear good fruit in our own lives, and also in the lives of others.

As we think about vines and wine, I do encourage you to receive Holy Communion in both kinds, the Host and the Cup.  ‘Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands.  It will become our spiritual drink.’  (This is the priest’s offertory prayer.)  Receiving the Precious Blood under the form of wine is a vivid and radical sign of our unity with Christ the true vine, the source of our life, without whom (as he says) we can do nothing.

Today (Sat)    2nd Collection today for Ecclesiastical Education.

Flavio Iorio will speak after each Mass about the Knights of St Columba.  We also have the CWL Bring & Buy Sale after both Sunday Masses.

Mon (11th)     Journey in Faith recommences at 8.00pm in the Presbytery.  A relaxed and informal session on the basics of the Catholic Faith.  There are flyers in the porch: ‘The Saints and Sinners’.

Tues (12th)    Justice & Peace Group 8.00pm.  Could we please have a full attendance of members – and also new members!  Conservation/Manna Centre/Fairtrade Jesuit Refugee Service and many other things will be discussed.  Remember that justice and the integrity of creation are at the heart of the Gospel.

Wed (13th)     New Eucharistic Ministers training session (8.00pm in church).

Thurs (14th)  11.30am Requiem Mass for Phyllis Skerman, RIP (Angela Bunnage’s mother), followed by committal at Lewisham Crematorium at 1.00pm.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.  This will be the parish Mass for the day – there will be no 9.30am Mass on Thursday.

8.30pm Mission & Planning Team meeting (MaP) in the Servers’ Room.

Sat (16th)       Newcomers Evening in the Social Centre following the 6.00pm Mass.  Would newcomers please reply as we need to know numbers!  Newcomers who have not received an invitation please collect one from porch TODAY and return the slip – thank you.

Next weekend is Mgr Elliott’s Golden Jubilee at 11.30am Mass

followed by a light buffet in the Social Centre.  All parishioners are warmly welcome.  Could you please bring some finger food?  Please sign list in the porch.  There will be a retiring collection for Mgr after all Masses today.

Concert by ‘Lyra’ vocal ensemble – Friday 22nd May at 8.00pm

We are looking forward  to hosting this group, here in St James’.  LYRA is a group of four young highly talented singers from St Petersburg, Russia.  They will be singing Russian church and folk music, and are anxious to share the riches of Russian culture with us.  They are touring and singing in many churches throughout the country.  This will be a very special event after which there will be a retiring collection.  Please support!

Day of Celebration for the Year of St.Paul on Saturday 27th June at Aylesford

Very few people have signed the list for the coach which is disappointing.  All our neighbouring parishes are supporting this Diocesan event so please sign up today and let’s fill the 49 seater!  We have reduced the price to £7.50 per person!!

There’s a lot going on in the parish at the moment.  Do look at the porch board and also visit our website which is regularly and brilliantly maintained by our webmaster (stjamespettswood.org).  Also, make sure you have our attractive new parish handbook (mauve cover – one per family please) available from the porch carousel.  Also take a yellow sheet listing many of our summer events.  And finally.....many thanks to the faithful band workers who turned up yesterday (Saturday) for gardening and other jobs.  This is greatly appreciated!
