Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament − Monday 10am-12 noon

Today is the solemnity of the Epiphany (the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles − all non-Jewish people − i.e. us).  The wise men in the story symbolize the fulfilment of Israel’s wisdom tradition (the Old Testament books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs and Ecclesiasticus) and point to Christ who ‘is the power and wisdom of God.’ (I Cor.1.25).  The three gifts point to the nature of Jesus Christ who is king (gold), God (frankincense) and a sacrifice for the sins of the world (myrrh.)

So a very rich feast today.  Let us pray that we, like the wise men, might be guided by the star who is Christ, and that we might all attain his wisdom.

I do thank you once again for your generosity on Christmas Day, and for all the help with the Christmas preparations.  A warm welcome back to those of you who have been away for Christmas.  A fortnight today (20th) we are hosting the short (15mins) service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity followed by a bring and share lunch in the Social Centre.  I do encourage you all to come to this, and to meet with members of the other Petts Wood Churches.  The service will be at 12.40pm (immediately after the 11.30 Mass) with lunch at 1.0.pm.

I received this on a Christmas card from a poet-friend. Have a good week.

Fr. Bryan.
