Confessions: Saturday at 6.50pm after the 6.00pm Mass and Monday 10.00am after the 9.30am Mass also by prior appointment or at call. Also on Holy Saturday, 11th April from 10.00-11.30am
Welcome to Mass today
Today we begin Holy Week (do take a poster for your window) which is the most solemn week in the entire Christian year. We commemorate the events of Jesus’ last week on earth, culminating in the Triduum (‘three days’) of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and (most important of all) the Easter Vigil and Mass. I do hope as many of you as possible will be at these three services, which form a unity.
Do try and keep these few days free from the usual distractions and attractions, and encourage each other (and especially our children and young people) to think about Jesus’ great sacrifice for us, and for the entire human race. (Do take the Bible booklets for April/Easter, also Junior My Day by Day for children at 50p.)
Sunday evening Stations of the Cross at 5.30pm. This is a wonderful and moving devotion on our Lord’s suffering and death – do come if possible. It ends at about 6.00pm. See the website for further details.
Tuesday (7th) 5.00pm: Reception of body of Kenneth Jackson, RIP.
7.00-8.30pm (NB change of time): Servers practice for Holy Week.
Wednesday (8th) Requiem (funeral) Mass for Kenneth Jackson, RIP at 10.30am. Our deepest sympathy to Margaret, and to Maureen and Dennis, and to the whole family – who welcome all parishioners to the Mass. Followed by burial at Chislehurst. (NB no 9.30am Mass on Wednesday.)
Choir practice for Holy Week- 8.00pm
Thursday (9th) Mass of the Lord’s Supper 8.00pm. I would ask all Eucharistic Ministers to attend please to renew their promises for another year. (Mass of the Holy Oils at the Cathedral at 11.30am – all bishops, priests and deacons. Congregation most welcome but be there early !!).
Friday (10th) Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday at 3pm.
Saturday (11th) Sacrament of Reconciliation (‘confession’ from 10.00-11.30am)
New Fire, Easter proclamation, Vigil and Mass of Easter at 8.00pm.
New Rotas
These are in the carousel in the porch....If there is ever a problem with a rota, would you please try and ‘sort it’ (!) – especially if you cannot manage a duty. There is no objection at all to changes but I would ask that this is done by the people concerned who should have all contact details. Thank you.
Eucharistic Ministers
There will be a special on-going formation session for all eucharistic ministers on Saturday 25th April (9.30am–12.30pm) here at St James and I do hope that every minister will attend. Please let me know if you are unable to attend. Thank you.
Welcome Booklet
This weekend we are launching the Welcome Booklet, which the Welcoming Team has been preparing over recent months. Our thanks to all who have assisted in its preparation, and especially Chris Hairs who has spent many hours overseeing the project. (Just one per household, please.) The booklet contains a wealth of information about our parish, and will be very helpful to all parishioners, especially newcomers.
Gift Aid
Could Gift Aid Donors please advise if they have NOT paid sufficient tax to cover their donations as this is a legal requirement. Thank you (Geoff Ford)
Handel’s Messiah
Wow! Many, many thanks to everyone who supported this project – sponsored by Petts Wood Churches Together. The choir and players excelled themselves, giving two wonderful performances. Almost £2,000 was raised for Harris HospiceCare with St Christopher’s. ‘....local churches working together, through music, to serve the local community...’ (from the programme). Special thanks to all the St James’ singers and supporters – you did yourselves proud!
Thanks also to all who cleaned the church on Saturday morning! It was a real community event and the church looks great for Holy Week. And thanks also to many of you who have been working so hard in many ways for the parish in recent weeks. It is all greatly appreciated. Best wishes and thanks to John Masson as he hands over St James’ School to Anna Bosher next term. We are richly blessed with our parish, school and community – Deo gratias!
Fr Bryan.
