Confessions: Saturday at 6.50pm after the 6.00pm Mass and Monday 10.00am after the 9.30am Mass also by prior appointment or at call.  Exposition: Monday 10.00-11.00am.(Please note these new times)

Welcome to Mass today – and especially to any new people in our community – we hope you will soon feel a valued part of our parish.  Do come into the adjoining Social Centre for coffee after Mass.

In the Gospel reading today, Jesus gives a dramatic demonstration of his divine authority.  It is the first miracle St Mark records in his Gospel.  We remind ourselves that the Church is of divine foundation, and that all of us are subject to the authority of Jesus.  That is why we must pray constantly for the guidance of his Holy Spirit, and not merely conform to the ways of this world.  The Catholic Church teaches with Christ’s authority.  That is why we belong to it.

Today:            After 10.00am Mass the First Communion classes for children NOT at Catholic Schools will take place.  Parents please take children immediately after Communion through to the Social Centre.

Handel’s Messiah rehearsal (3.30-5.00pm).  We still need more tenors and basses and I do earnestly appeal to the men of the congregation.

Monday:         Journey in Faith – This is a great opportunity for the many of you who are non-Catholics who worship here in St James, as well as for Catholics.  I do hope many more of you will come along (8.00-9.30pm at 281A ) to what is always a relaxed and often humorous session, with absolutely no obligation involved.  Hope to see you!

Tuesday:        Mission & Planning Team will meet in the Social Centre at 8.00pm.  Last week I announced the Pastoral Advisory Team; this week we start the Mission & Planning Team.  This consists of members of the parish who I have invited to assist me in reflecting on our parish life together and to plan strategically for the immediate, short and long term.  They are: Aline Dalgleish, Sue David, Breda Ford, Kate Charlesworth, Ann Jackson, Marie Morley, Madeleine Howell, Peter Benson, Owen Clutton, Austin Barradell, Nick Babb, Chris Hairs, David McCabe and Roger Wright.

We hope to display photos of both teams in the porch.  Please be assured that this is NOT a ‘closed shop’ or ‘clique’ and members of both teams will be very happy to feed your comments and ideas into team meetings.  The Mission & Planning team will report regularly to the parish and may occasionally co-opt people.  I am very grateful to them (and, of course, to the countless other people who work so hard for the parish) – please remember them in your prayers.

The formation of both teams is a first attempt at collaborative ministry which I believe is the only way forward for any Christian community, and we have much to learn.

Mass Intentions as soon as possible please, and to avoid disappointment if you want a specific date – thank you!

Holy Communion I do encourage you all to receive Holy Communion in both kinds (i.e.  the Host and the Cup) in obedience to Jesus’ clear command at the Last Supper “Take this all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood ...It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.  Do this in memory of me.”

The back porch This was built for parents whose children might be difficult during Mass.  It is a last resort, and I do encourage you to always come into the body of the Church for Mass and to use the porch only if it is really necessary.  Having brought up three children, I do know the problems! Never feel embarrassed by your children’s behaviour but use the porch when necessary.

Thank you to the many people who came to the Church Unity Service last Sunday evening at Southborough Baptist.  It was a wonderful occasion and many new friendships were made.  Also the people of Christ Church United Reformed send their prayers and good wishes to us all at St James’ and have sent a lovely poster for the children (10.00am Mass).

Lots to look at in the porch today and also the CTS pamphlet stand has been replenished (20p per pamphlet).

The Credit Crunch “I want you to be free from all worry.” (St Paul in today’s 2nd reading.) Many of you are worried about your jobs, and we all know people who are.  Can we make a pastoral response?  Any ideas to me or to team members.

Every blessing – Fr Bryan
