1.       Minutes of last meeting

There were no matters arising from the previous minutes.

2.       Schedule of calendar dates to be requested for 2015-16

RW was asked to send the list of dates, which J&P would be proposing, electronically to the parish office, so they could be considered with other parish commitments in due course.  It was agreed to ask for 2 Foodbank collections, 2 parish project collections (and 2 fund-raising events will be run), 1 Manna Centre collection.  The publicity for all collections will be improved as donations have decreased markedly over the last year.

[The various dates of interest have now been compiled and can be seen later in these minutes.  Please check and feed back any queries.  By a happy coincidence DB/GT have scheduled a Traidcraft stall in the middle of Fairtrade Fortnight.  RW]

JA will ask Terry and Alice Wills if they will run a quiz night in March 2016 as a fund-raiser for the new Parish Project.

Fr David said he hoped the formation of a Parish Council later this year will improve coordination between groups and help streamline event planning and coordination.

Fr David mentioned the “One World Day” being organised by Petts Wood Churches Together on Saturday 24 October.  He was involved in finding a speaker to talk about European migrants which he had done through the Jesuit Refugee Service.  He asked the J&P Group to assist him with organising the slot concerned with European life and culture.  This would involve as many different European nationals attending St James’ as possible (perhaps other churches too?).  Features might include dress, food, language, customs, etc.  He will announce this in September.

3.       New parish project

OC had made strenuous efforts to validate the authenticity of Fr Ivan’s work in India in order that any funds sent to him were used in schemes that were accountable.  He explained that this was not only essential for satisfying parishioners but might also be necessary for HMRC.  He had attempted to seek information about Fr Ivan’s mission from the UK headquarters of the Society of the Divine Word.  He had spoken to a priest there but had no confidence in the response or even if his role was sufficiently responsible.

Fr David observed that such contact with any order should always be through the Provincial in the country concerned.  Members present were content to switch to a missionary cause associated with the order Fr David had been a member of for 21 years, namely the Missionary Society of Saint Paul (MSSP).  He mentioned in particular work being done in Peru.  Fr David will make enquiries with contacts in MSSP.  [Action superseded following conversations between OC and Fr David about Fr Ivan.]

4.       Laudato Si'

MM reported that a group of parishioners had been brought together in order to trial a Laudato Si' study guide which will be published by CAFOD in September.  This took place on Saturday 18 July and comments had been passed back to CAFOD.  The study guide will consist of four or five sessions, each one focussing on a particular theme inspired by the encyclical.

She gave her first impressions of the encyclical which she found refreshing, quite long but very readable, that it covers a wide range of ecological and cultural issues, and it seems balanced and not political.

Fr David observed that Laudato Si' is a powerful document which is a guide to ethical living, addressing the world’s culture of waste and the need to care for everyone and everything.

5.       Leave the Car at Home Weekend

It was agreed to hold this on the weekend of 26-27 September.  This would be the same weekend as we hope to give the CAFOD Harvest Fast Day talks (Fast Day on Friday 02 October).  RW should provide Fr David with publicity for this event at an appropriate time.  It was hoped to revive the ethos of LiveSimply in the parish later this year and Leave the Car at Home Weekend might be a suitable reminder.

6.       Any other business

RW was asked to produce a revised version of the Zambuko House project synopsis in time for the second collection on 16 August.

DB wondered if it would be possible to have some record of the many trees which were sponsored as part of LiveSimply.  Now that the ‘pretend tree’ with its memorial leaves has been removed there is nothing to remind us of the people and occasions marked by the trees.  RW promised to look into this.

There being no other business, the meeting closed at 9.15pm.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 23 September 2015 at 7.45pm.
