“Familiarity breeds contempt”.

In the Gospel today we see Jesus preaching to the people of Nazareth, and the result is their anger and violence.  “Who does he think he is?..... we’ve known him since he was a boy”.

Very often we dislike people who tell us the truth. Often these are the same people who love us, but because we are so close, so familiar with them, it is often difficult for us to really hear what they say.

And it’s the same with God who actually knows us better than anyone else (“before I formed you in the womb I know you”) and so it was with Jesus. He knew his own people and loved them. May we try to really listen to those who love us, because they are probably speaking God’s message to us.

Tuesday (Feb 2nd) is the feast of Candlemas – the day in which Jesus was presented in the Temple in accordance with Jewish custom and he is recognised by two very old people (Anna and Simeon) as the true light of the world.  At Mass on Tuesday evening we shall light candles to remind us of this, but we are also reminded of the wisdom and insight of older people.
