Today is Lent 4- mid Lent and Mothering Sunday. We thank God for our mothers, and we pray for them- especially those who have departed this life.  We also thank God for Mary, Mother of Jesus, and for our Holy Mother, the Church.

We pause, halfway through Lent and ask ourselves: are we sticking to our resolutions? And if not, maybe they were unrealistic?  Perhaps we ought to ‘reset our compass’ and try again?

Next SundayService of Reconciliation for Lent. at 3.30pm followed by an opportunity to make your confession( if you wish), (4 priests).  All are encouraged to come, especially our many young families with children who have made their first communion.

The Cross and Failure is this week’s topic in ‘Looking Through the Cross’ which will be led by Rev. Jon Ehlers.  If you have not been to any of the sessions do come along on Monday, 1.30pm-3pm (repeated 8pm-9.30pm), at the Methodist Church, Lakeswood  Road. It would be good if those of you with any spiritual and/or catechetical or leadership role in the parish could go- please make the most of this opportunity.

Maintenance Fund – 2nd collection today – we forgot this last week!!  As you know we have major refurbishment of the hall in sight but now we need to address urgent work on the tower, which constantly lets in water; and also mother church maintenance issues.  So please continue to give generously (please Gift Aid!!)- and many thanks for all that has been achieved thus far.

Please collect your new Gift Aid envelopes from the back corridor, and also your ordered Real Easter Eggs.  It is frustrating when things are just left sometimes for weeks on end......

Many thanks to all who came to (or sang in) the PWFC concert  last Sunday, which was a great success.  Petts Wood Churches Together has sent a cheque for £1400 to Bromley and Lewisham’. ‘Mind.’ (mental health charity.)

This evening:

7’s and 8’s at 5pm and confirmation group at 6.30pm (parents are reminded  that cheques for retreat should be in by TODAY).

Church cleaning next Saturday (5th) – all Readers please (10am-11 am).

‘You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; be like children of light, for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and right living and truth.....Wake up from your sleep, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’  (today’s 2nd reading- letter to the Ephesians).

Fr Bryan.

Tickets £3.50, or £10 per family- available next weekend.  PLEASE sign up as you leave Mass today.

Our Boot Fair on March 1st was, as you know, very successful (c. £600 made for the parish).  However the LiveSimply group bought a table and raised over £500 for the Cardinal Hume Centre for the Homeless.  They would like to thank all those who donated items for sale to achieve this great result.

Swieconka – Easter Food Basket Blessing- a Polish tradition, which many of our congregation would like to celebrate.

The foods are:

White napkin that lines the basket represents the shroud of Christ;

Lamb in butter, sugar or dough (sometimes plastic or plaster!) stands for Jesus, the Paschal Lamb;

Hard boiled (and coloured/decorated) eggs symbolize new life or Christ rising from the tomb;

Bread represents the Bread of life given by God;

Meat and sausages are symbols of the resurrected Christ;

Horseradish (or peppercorns) represents accepting the bitter and the sweet in life;

Salt is to add zest to life and preserve us from corruption;

Sweets suggest the promise of eternal life or good things to come.

What a lot we can learn from this rich tradition! ALL are most welcome- Holy Saturday (April 19th) at 11.30am (not a Mass- a service of food blessing lasting c. 15-20 mins.)  Bring your foods along in a basket! (Prayers in English and Polish).
