Fr David Writes…

I truly believe that it is not by chance that we find ourselves in a particular community.  We are attracted to it for different reasons.  Some of us have been part of St James’ for so long that it has become part of our own identity.  These are usually called “established members” of the community.  They have either grown up in the parish or else had long ago adopted it to be their place of worship and community.  Others along the years had moved into the area for various reasons and have felt a sense of belonging to the parish.  Some had engaged in volunteering in the diverse ministries in the parish whilst others feel that what they really need is to receive the weekly nourishment that is provided here.  And that is fine as well.  Others see themselves as newcomers to the parish.  Sometimes when you are new to an already established community, you might feel threatened to infiltrate that community.

Entering a community is never easy.  One needs patience and tolerance from both sides.  Yet a welcoming community is one which is ready to embrace the new and not be threatened by them.  A truly Christian community is not territorial.  A truly Christian community is inclusive.  It embraces and not pushes away and excludes.  God brings us all together in one community for a reason.  We are all hungry for nourishment, for a sense of belonging, for God.  As believers, we believe that the nourishment – the fish and bread are provided for us within the community.  We do not need to search for it outside of ourselves.  God has provided us with the skills and talents that we need as a community to grow.  One just needs to be brave enough to offer himself or herself and the established community needs to be open enough to receive and ask for whatever the needs are.  Once this is done, God multiplies our resources for the good of the whole community.  So I would like to encourage you to share your resources with us and I pray that we as a community will be open to receive them with grateful hearts.  This is what makes us a Eucharistic Community.  A community which celebrates gratefulness to God and for the gift of one another.  This is what we are celebrating especially this weekend in the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.

I would like to thank you all for your prayers, emails, well wishing cards and thoughts during my time of medical investigations.  It hasn’t been an easy time for me, as those of you who had to go through it will surely appreciate.  But I can assure you that your love and concern and prayers helped me through.  I wish to let you know that what I have is treatable and I thank God for that.  I wish also to thank Paula and Suzanne who in my absence had carried the parish responsibilities.  I wish also to thank in a special way Fr Barry, Fr Jim Nolan and Fr John Kitchener who stepped in for me during this time.  Thank you also for those who helped to keep the parish going in my absence too.  I will resume my parish ministry on Bank Holy Monday.  God bless you all and thank you once again.
