Today we celebrate St. Peter and St. Paul – ‘twin foundation martyrs’ of the early church in Rome. This is why Rome is the centre of unity of the Catholic Church - both men executed (c. 65 AD?) in Rome for refusing to worship the emperor.  St Peter symbolizes the internal life and structure of the church; St. Paul the outreach and mission of the church.  Both of course are essential for the well-being of the church and, of course, the parish, which is the church gathered in a locality.

2nd collection today for ‘Peter’s Pence’ – helping the Holy See (Rome) in its works of mercy and charity.  (Pope Francis is the 266th successor Simon Peter, the first Pope).

Last chance today to sign up for July 13th and /or 20th.  Lists in back corridor.  The buffet lunch on the 13th is only for those who have signed up. (We are catering for a specific number).  (NB St. James School Choir and parents).

July 13th will be a very special day for this as, in the presence of our Archbishop, we thank God for the past 75 years, and pledge ourselves to continuing the work of the church in the years to come.  We shall also receive the LiveSimply Award, which will be presented by Chris Bain (Chief Executive of CAFOD).  Plus a few other things.......not a day to be missed, I would have thought!

July 20th our (now) annual Fun Run! (registration forms in porch) followed by our garden party / and the bring and share lunch in the garden. Should be great fun!

Fr Bryan.

First Communion Children gather again today after the 11am Mass for their communion breakfast.  Many thanks to those organising this, and to all the catechists who have worked so hard with the children over the past months.  The first communion Masses were beautiful occasions, due in large part to the catechists - thank you!

From Archbishop Peter:-

Assisted Dying Bill - Please write to a member of the House of Lords.

The Bill to legalise ‘assisted dying’ – meaning assisted suicide - will be debated in the House of Lords on 18th July 2014.  There will be a free vote because it is not government legislation.  If passed, this Bill would place vulnerable people at serious risk.  Especially if you have direct experience of caring for a dying person, either as a family member or as a health or social care professional, please write before 18th July to a Peer to tell them your views.  For more information, including details of how to write to a Peer, please visit: www.catholicchurch.org.uk/assisted-dying-bill

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WRITE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND CERTAINLY BEFORE 18th JULY.

Thank you for your assistance min this important ‘life’ issue.

+Peter.

Class of 63 Sacred Heart Hammersmith If you or anyone you know were in this group we would love to hear from you for a possible reunion. Please contact Carole (née Agius) on carole.appleford@gmail.com or 07962 171695

Rose Medley known to many parishioners as the organist here in past years- has died peacefully aged 91 yrs.  Her requiem will be at St. Mary’s , Chislehurst, next Thursday (3rd) at 10.30am, and I know some of you will wish to go. May she rest in peace.

Mass Intentions Please get these in asap (brown envelopes in porch then pop in the safe on wall). And please make it clear as to whether your intention (if a person) is alive or not!

Be kind to our planet

We’ve won the parish LiveSimply award but mustn’t give up our promise to be more environmentally friendly.  So the suggestions will continue in Briefly.  No ideas from anyone in the parish have been received yet, so come on children try telling the adults what we have to do – please send suggestions to livesimply@stjamespettswood.org.  This week’s suggestion:

Avoid bottled water (when safe to do so).  It takes 3 litres of water to produce 1 litre of bottled water.  British tap water is excellent – and it’s fine to bottle your own!
