Today we begin Holy Week, and the climax is  Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Eve. These are known as the “Triduum”– and they form a unity. They take us through the Paschal Mystery, when Jesus “passes” from death to life and we are invited to participate.

Please come to Mass on Holy Thursday at 8pm and on Easter Eve at 9pm.  I say this because although the church is usually full on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, it is not on these other two days, and this fragments the unity of the Liturgy.  Full details of all services (and confession times) are on the porch board. May Easter 2010 be a time of great spiritual growth for us as individuals and as a parish community.

Two Bowls

On that night, there were

Two bowls of water.

The first was taken

And used for washing feet,

Symbol he said, of love.

The second was called for

And used for washing hands,

Disclaiming responsibility.

Two bowls are constantly before us:

Into which shall we dip our hands?

.... A poem by Ann Lewin

Welcome to Mass on Palm Sunday. We process and follow Our Lord into Jerusalem, and hopefully we stay with him throughout the week as he achieves our reconciliation with God through the offering of himself on the cross.  We welcome any visitors to our worship and invite everyone to coffee in the adjoining hall after Mass.

Gift Aid

Thanks to all who have gift-aided their 1st and 2nd collection offerings during the 2009/10 tax year.   Boxes of Gift Aid envelopes for the new tax year are ready for collection next to the pulpit/ Please note that the name on the box must be a UK tax payer. If you cannot find your box please speak to Geoff Ford (the Gift Aid Administrator) or email him on gift.aid@stjamespettswood.org.  If there are any gift –aiders who are concerned that the tax they have paid is not at last equal to the refund we will seek, please contact Geoff as soon as possible.  You must have paid at least £25 in tax for every £100 put in the Gift Aid envelopes.  Please speak to Geoff if:

a)      You wish to know the total recorded amount of your offerings (e.g.  for a Tax Return)

b)      You move or marry and change your names.  It is important that our record of your name and address is recognisable to the tax man

c)       You wish to transfer your gift aid into your spouse’s name (perhaps because you have stopped working and no longer pay tax)

d)      You would like to Gift Aid your contributions to St James but have not yet completed a declaration form.

As every charity will tell you, by gift-aiding your donations your contributions are substantially increased at no cost whatsoever to you.  Last year St James obtained a tax clawback of £13,726 for the 2008/9 tax year.

Do remember that Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence (see porch board).

Every blessing.  Fr. Bryan
