A warm welcome is extended to all our Parishioners, new members of our Parish and any visitors who are here with us this weekend.

Fr David writes......

For those of our age group, we can remember very well the catchy tune of Abba’s song “Knowing me – Knowing you”.  Although I cannot claim that it had very deep lyrics, the relationship between knowing me and knowing you intrigued me.  Somehow the process of self knowledge has a strong connection with knowing the other.  What do we mean by knowledge of the other though?  Is it just about knowing the basics of the other person?  Is it about knowing the height, the weight, the colour of ones eyes or hair?  The role that they possess in the wider world?  Or does knowledge entail a deeper understanding of the other person.  Knowing the core of the other.  I think the latter demands a process of understanding – their history, their background, their strengths and their weakness.  It is uncovering what makes the other person tick and to understand as much as possible the inner world of the other.  I do understand however that we can never fully understand the other person.  As an individual the other is a mystery.  A profound healthy relationship though has the space and the time to step into the other person’s inner world and see him or her as they are.  We can only do this I believe if we have gone through our own self discovery.  Our own understanding of ourself.  Otherwise we can only project our own desires and needs on the other.  How many times have we been infatuated about a person and believing that the image they are portraying to us is the reality and afterwards we find out that we have been deceived?  That we had only believed a lie.  And that even worse, we had wanted to believe the lie.  A true encounter between two souls demands a process – a journey.  Demands a purification of one’s own ego to see clearer the other.  This is what happens in a relationship between two healthy human beings.  Jesus today asks his disciples who do people say he is and once he got the answer he looks at them and turns personal – but you who do you say that I am?  After living with me three years – after experiencing me first hand, who do you think I am?  It was only Peter, the rough diamond and flawed Peter who went straight to his core and proclaims to him that he is the Christ – the son of the living God.  Peter away from his own ego, saw through and went straight to the essence of Jesus.  Jesus rewarded him by saying – you are the Rock on whom I will build my church.  The Church is asking us this week to answer this question too – Who do you think is Jesus for you?  It is ok if our answer is silence like the rest of the disciples but hopefully we will have the courage to answer honestly at least in our hearts.  Happy Feast everyone!

Bromley Foodbank

There will be a collection for the Bromley Borough Foodbank on the weekend of 11-12th July.  The long summer holidays presents very specific problems as children cannot access school meals.  For many children this is often their main, or even their only meal.  St James’ is a wonderfully generous parish and the staff at the Foodbank are extremely grateful for all our contributions.

Coffee Rota

Volunteers are needed for the coffee rota for after Sunday 9.15am, Sunday 11 am and Wednesday 9.30am Mass.  We are really short of volunteers, particularly for the 9.15 Mass. If you can help please email rotas@stjamespettswood.org.  Thank You.

Weekly Catholic Publications

These are for sale on a table by the Baptistery.  You will find the Catholic Herald (£2), Catholic Universe (£1.30), Catholic Times (£1.30) and The Tablet (£3) on sale.  Please support the Catholic press and hear our side of the ‘story’.  Sales at St James’ are not good and we will have to terminate our order if parishioners don’t buy the papers.  Once a month you will also find The Pilgrim which is produced by the diocese for all its parishes.  The parish pays for these so you should take a copy free of charge.

Parish Forum

Thank you to all of those who attended the Parish Forum on Monday evening.  The minutes will be available soon on the website.
