The gospel today is the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration.  He invited his three closest associates (Peter, James and John) to go with him up Mount Tabor, and allowed them to witness his ecstatic experience.

Jesus is now perceived as the perfect fulfilment of Judaism- the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah).  It is the “hinge” moment when he sets his face toward Jerusalem and certain death.

This event is called a theophany – a moment of God’s revelation of himself – the Father discloses Jesus as his Beloved Son and the disciples are to “listen” to him.

So must we.

Transfiguration

A moment of blinding perception-

It would be good to stay there,

But clutch it, and it’s gone.

They come unheralded,

Those moments of dazzling clarity,

And leave us as suddenly.

As well try catch the kingfisher.

Darting though stillness.

Be thankful for its jewelled beauty,

And keep awake, alert.           A poem by Ann Lewin
