Be kind to our planet

We’ve won the parish LiveSimply award but mustn’t give up our promise to be more environmentally friendly.  This week it’s a simple practical action which also saves money:

If you have a garden, dry clothes out there and not in a tumble dryer

The past few weeks in the parish have been truly celebratory and memorable - the Archbishop’s visit on our 75th Anniversary on the 13th, the Live Simply Award, the presentation of the Diocesan Medal to Sheila Simon (RIP 17-7-14), (and how great it was that Sheila was in church to receive it from the Archbishop), the blessing of the LiveSimply Garden; and then the wonderful celebration last Sunday (20th), following our Fun Run.  We were blessed with glorious weather for both events, - and the Teddy Bears’ Picnic was also really enjoyed on the 21st.

Teresa and I thank all of you for your great generosity and for your kind wishes.  We have received so many cards and gifts from individuals and groups in the parish, and we are profoundly grateful.  In particular the book ‘Memories’ is a wonderful photographic compilation of the past eight years, produced by Audrey Wright and will remind us of many of the major events of that time- there will also be a copy for parishioners to peruse in church.  Thank you, Audrey, for all your hard work and commitment to this.

But also the water colour of St James’ Church, by Rachel (Pam Lundy’s daughter), which will have a place of honour in our new home.  Thank you so much, Rachel.  It is displayed this weekend in front of the altar- a painting full of life, which has really ‘captured the essence.’

Thank you also for your ‘jar of messages’, and for the many kind things you said.  In addition we had messages from every child in St James’ School - many thanks children, (and teachers) for those!

Profound thanks to the many people who work to keep the parish in motion, week by week, year by year.  A priest simply could not function without them and I have been blessed by the help of so many gifted and committed parishioners.  It has all been greatly appreciated and I am sure you will continue with my successor.

It has been a privilege to minister as a priest here.  St James’ is a strong Catholic community and Fr. Tom is looking forward to starting and getting to know you all.  Please fully support him and each other – and please be receptive to new ideas and insights.  I also hope that many of the things we have established over the past eight years will continue to grow and develop, and take the parish forward into the next phase of its life.

We leave a simple St James statue with you, marking the 75th year of the parish, and there is also a bookmark to take with the parish mission statement on, together with a reminder of our patron saint, James the Great - ‘brother of the Lord.’  What a lovely title.  If we try to do God’s will in our lives, Jesus tells us that we are all his brothers, sisters, etc.

We shall miss you all but I think you know we shall be in Orpington and so we are not disappearing completely!

Please pray for us, as we shall for you.  This community will always have a deep and special place in our hearts.

Every blessing. Fr Bryan.
