“You cannot be the slave both of God and money.” (Today’s gospel.)

Jesus reminds us to trust in God and not be anxious about material needs- to grow into an attitude of trust in God and not to grasp at the latest material attraction. We are to set our hearts on God’s kingdom first, and then everything else will fall into place.  This poem is on this theme:

Devoted as I Am

Devoted as I am

to the teachings of

my financial guru,

my political party,

my fitness trainer,

I pick and choose

from your Word-

disregarding it when

it makes me uncomfortable.

Devoted as I am

to accumulating

more and more stuff,

It is difficult

to entrust my junk

to those who would

consider it treasure.

Devoted as I am to

my securities

my pension,

my future,

I find it easy

to pass by those

for whom each day

is such a struggle.

You have hallowed me

with your overflowing gifts,

oh God:

help me to give

myself away to others

completely.

Amen                          ...............a poem by Thom M Shuman
