Today we celebrate the reality of the God we believe in – the Most Holy Trinity- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although the doctrine of the Trinity was not defined by the church until the fourth century, it was implicit from the beginning, in the apostolic tradition and in the scriptures, and today’s readings all point us towards a Trinitarian understanding of God.

Like many people today, we may find this belief- or indeed any belief about God -very difficult.  The great poet John Donne (1572-1631), one time Dean of St.Paul’s Cathedral, struggled with his faith. His famous ‘Batter my heart’ reflects this struggle. In a sense we have to ‘let go’, and ‘let God be God’ in us; we need to be still, receptive, to what God wants to do with us. And then maybe – just maybe- our faith, our way, may become a little clearer.

‘Batter my heart, three-personed God, for you

As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;

That I may rise and stand, o’erthrow me, and bend

Your force to break blow, burn, and make me new.

I, like an usurped town to another due,

Labor to admit to you, but oh, to no end;

Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend, is captive, and proves weak, or untrue.

Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain

But am betrothed unto your enemy;

Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,

Take me to you, imprison me, for I,

Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,

Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.’

We welcome Deacon Duncan Aitkins as preacher at all Masses this weekend.

We wish a happy half-term break to our children and young people.

Next Saturday also: LiveSimply garden team 9am-1pm.  Come and help to develop the garden on this second session of site clearance.  It was good fun last time.
