Next Friday-March 2nd-is Lent Fast Day and this year CAFOD invites us to help people living without one of God’s most precious resources- clean water. A child under 5 dies every 20 seconds because of dirty water. For this Lent only, the UK government will match pound for pound every donation given to CAFOD, giving it a chance to help thousands more people gain access to water and other vital services.

Please use the CAFOD envelopes available this week and NOT the parish envelopes, making sure you complete the Gift Aid section if appropriate. Your donations will be collected next weekend. Do have a look at the posters around church, after Mass.

Our first two readings today are about water : God’s covenant with Noah (symbolized by the rainbow) after the flood; the 2nd reading is about baptism. In the gospel Jesus proclaims the Good News of the kingdom of God. Having clean water to drink will certainly be good news for thousands of our sisters and brothers around the world.

Today we launch our parish library, which is situated in the small room off the choir gallery. Do use this new resource- especially during Lent. We have 500 titles on most aspects of our Catholic Faith, including very recent titles. We should be grateful to the library team who have set this up- thanks also to those of you who will be librarians.

Also you might like to watchCatholics’ – 2nd of 3 next Thursday, BBC4 AT 9.0.pm. It would be good to have some feedback on these programmes. And on Tuesday at Christ Church, Willett Way we are showing ‘Brother Sun, Sister Moon’-biopic on St.Francis of Assisi -(7.30pm). A lovely film (1972), which has stood the test of time! Coffee and brief chat after.

All our Lenten activities are on ‘A feast of Lent’ flyer- do take a copy.

The Ash Wednesday Masses were a wonderful start to Lent- and it was a great pleasure to welcome Rev. Paul Hulme (Methodist Minister), together with many of our Christian sisters and brothers from the other PW churches to our evening Mass.  Equally moving was the Rite of Election yesterday (Saturday) in the cathedral, when 12 of our adult candidates for baptism and confirmation were presented to the Archbishop, together with hundreds of others from around the diocese.

Let us thank God for all these blessings, and many others, as we begin Lent.
