There are many themes for us to think about today.

Liturgically it is the Solemnity of Christ the King – the last Sunday of the church’s year- and the official end of the ‘Year of Faith’ initiated by Pope Benedict. What a year it has been! Who could have foreseen the resignation of Pope Benedict and the election of Pope Francis? In today’s gospel the penitent thief is promised the kingdom by Jesus, who is ‘the image of the unseen God.’ (2nd reading). We all need to renew our penitence and I encourage everyone to receive the sacrament of reconciliation (‘confession’) during Advent. Times next week.

Next Sunday we start all over again with the holy season of Advent. The gospel readings (for the most part) on Sundays will be from St. Matthew’s  gospel- (cycle A)  and I shall be offering a session on St. Matthew’s gospel on Wednesday week (December 4th) at 10.15am-11.15am and again at 8.0.pm-9.0.pm. We shall look at the who, why and when of this gospel , its structure and main themes. I am hoping this will help with listening to it at Mass throughout the coming year, so that it really becomes God’s Word to us.

Today also we shall be hearing about ‘Hungry for Change’ (CAFOD campaign) and how we can keep the problem of world hunger on the government’s radar. As we look forward to the warmth and joy of Christmas, you will be invited to petition the Prime Minister- and it won’t cost you a penny!  ‘Live simply so that others may simply live.’

Today is also Youth Sunday –a day we can pray for all the youth groups- (uniformed or not)-in our parish- and also for the many leaders who give so generously of their time and talents. A huge ‘thank you’ to them all.

And we have a 2nd collection in aid of the Philippines typhoon disaster (which we shall send through CAFOD). (Many thanks for your offering for the Society of African Missions last Sunday- Fr.Rob really enjoyed his time with us).

Survey on Family Life  My gut feeling is that not many people have filled this in (I hope I’m wrong.) Please have a go!!  Just do the questions you feel happy with- and expand if you wish in sections 8 and 9. Paper copies in back corridor and help sheets on main porch table. All entries MUST BE IN BY NEXT Sunday (30th)!! (on line best but post paper copy if you wish).

Real Advent Calendars available today (and next Sunday) for those who have ordered them! Also Traidcraft  goods on sale next weekend. Please consider supporting poor farmers rather than supermarkets if you are buying extras for Christmas. Annual profit from the stalls will go to CAFOD ion January.

Many thanks to the Bereavement Support Group, and to the folk choir, and the children and staff from St James’ School for the lovely Mass last Sunday. It was greatly appreciated by all who came.

The confirmation catechists say a huge ‘thank you’ to the Knights of St Columba for their generous gift of a new iPod docking station to enhance the music used during sessions. The sound is amazing! and this great parish resource will be available for other youth groups. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Eco tip of the week

Household cleaning – the LiveSimply way

To clean chrome apply either white vinegar or soda water with a soft cloth. Then dry to a beautiful shine by rubbing with a clean cloth.

The LiveSimply prayer

Compassionate and loving God,

you created the world for us all to share,

a world of beauty and plenty.

Create in us a desire to live simply,

so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,

You gave us responsibility for the earth,

a world of riches and delight.

Create in us a desire to live sustainably,

so that those who follow after us

may enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,

You give us the capacity to change,

to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,

so that the pillars of injustice crumble

and those now crushed are set free.

Amen.
