Fr David writes......

Moving house can be daunting.  I am meeting quite a number of parishioners who had chosen to live in Petts Wood for one reason or another and who had uprooted themselves from other areas of London.  So I am sure you know what I am talking about.  Actually, any kind of transition unsettles us and really throws us into chaos.  What we used to take for granted before now it is no longer available to us.  Our familiar landscape has changed and we need to relearn sometimes even the basics.  The house at the beginning is in literal chaos with boxes all over the place.  And trying to find things at the start is very difficult.   This chaos even is reflected in what we feel internally.  Disorientation is a word I use.  Transition throws us into limbo.  And we feel out of control and also very vulnerable.  If however we stick with it and not try to escape the discomfort and the pain of “limbo” we can learn a lot about our own personalities and our own resources once we are in the midst of chaos.  The gospel this weekend starts with Jesus inviting the disciples to move on the other side of the sea.  They were on the move.  An image of transition.  Whilst they were in the boat on their way to the other side, a storm hits them.  They were almost swamped by the waves, we are told.  That must have been frightening.  They felt out of control and they were angry that Jesus was asleep and asked him – “do you not care that we are drowning” Jesus at that point calmed the sea! Yes we all can identify I think with the panic of emotions.  The anxiety of when we are struck by a storm out of the blue.  We feel unable to cope.  Our reactions can be manifold.  Retreat in our little cocoon.  Or on the other hand we tend to go on the fast lane not to think or feel and embrace activism.  As Christians we forget that in our little insecure boat there is Jesus – we become like the disciples – people of little faith.  We focus on only our own resources.  We don’t reach out to Jesus.  Amidst our problems in life we have a constant resource that we can count on.  Jesus is in the boat with us and he does care.  He will not abandon us.  He will send us the right people on our path to support us.  May our first holy communicants this weekend will always have this reassurance in their lives. Let us pray for them and their parents.

Scouts need your help!

You may have noticed at our parade masses that our numbers have grown and wonderfully they are continuing to do so!  Are you over 18 and interested in helping us out?  You don't have to be 'Scouty' to be a leader!  The Scout association gives full and free training.  All we need is someone willing to help who can engage with our young people, help them to grow in confidence and help foster their independence.  From September we will be down to 2 Scout leaders meaning that unless someone comes forward we will struggle to provide the fun programme that is attracting the young people of this parish to Scouts.  If you feel you may be able to give some time on a Friday night please come and speak to one of us after mass or email 3pwscouts@gmail.com.

Coffee Rota

Volunteers are needed for the coffee rota for after Sunday 9.15am, Sunday 11 am and Wednesday 9.30am Mass.  We are really short of volunteers, particularly for the 9.15 Mass. If you can help please email rotas@stjamespettswood.org.  Thank You.

Weekly Catholic Publications

These are for sale on a table by the Baptistery.  You will find the Catholic Herald (£2), Catholic Universe (£1.30), Catholic Times (£1.30) and The Tablet (£3) on sale.  Please support the Catholic press and hear our side of the ‘story’.  Sales at St James’ are not good and we will have to terminate our order if parishioners don’t buy the papers.  Once a month you will also find The Pilgrim which is produced by the diocese for all its parishes.  The parish pays for these so you should take a copy free of charge.

Fun Run

The fun run and garden party last Sunday was a great success.  Thanks to all who came on the day or supported the event in other ways.  An event report, pictures and results will be posted on the parish web-site soon.  188 runners completed the course and many thanks  to them and all who came to the garden party and contributed on the day.  Special thanks to the Explorer scouts, guides, Scouts, stewards, time keepers, Knights, Roger Wright, Terry Connolly, Pam Lundy, Joe Falzon, Sean Cadogan, face painters, sponsors, the BBQ team, bar team, cake makers  and all who supplied gazeboes and helped set up and clear upEarly estimates are that over £1,300 was raised but with much sponsorship money yet to be collected this total will rise. Please collect and pay all sponsorship money to Chris Delf or put in an envelope with your name to the Parish Office marked for the attention of Chris Delf.

St James’ School Fair
