Offertory collections

Fr David writes…

At the moment BBC1 is showing a very thought provoking series called Broken.  It tells the story of Fr Michael Kerrigan, a Catholic priest in Northern England who is battling his own secret struggles while at the same time being a confidant, counsellor and confessor to a community that is struggling to balance faith with the harsh realities of their daily lives.  As always the director Jimmy McGovern is edgy and portrays the raw reality of the human condition in the context of faith.  The drama we are enticed to watch every week is sometimes difficult to watch.  The celebration of the Eucharist is not portrayed as a sentimental pious experience but it both nourishes and challenges both the priest himself and also those who partake in it as parishioners.  The celebration of the Eucharist is not divorced from their everyday struggle and reality.  It actually speaks to it.  This week, a young policeman, with his own young family, was struggling with his conscience either to collude with an institutional lie or speak the truth.  And he seeks Fr Michael for advice.  After he decides that to be true to his own conscience, he was ready to state the truth of what had happened in the murder of a young black boy with the consequence of being targeted by his colleagues, he changes his mind “to keep the roof on his daughter’s head” he tells Fr Michael.  The disappointed Fr Michael then saw the young policeman coming up to receive communion.  Fr Michael seemed shocked at this and when he had the opportunity to ask him, why he came up for communion, the young man said “I have never needed it so badly”.

The priest could empathise with this statement as he is struggling himself with his own past demons.  He seems to be experiencing the passion in his own being every time he consecrates the body and blood of Christ.  He seems to be identifying with the Crucified One.  Fr Michael seems to portray a priest whom according to Pope Francis is someone “who smells of the odour of sheep”.  He does not spiritualise to his flock.  He meets them where they are at.  The Eucharist is not portrayed as being the prize for the self-righteous and holy.  It is not about power and control.  The Eucharist is portrayed as being food for those who are struggling in their lives.  Nourishment for the weak and the broken.  Fr Michael has a pastoral heart for his people.  He struggles with them.  He becomes a voice for the disenfranchised.  And in all of this, he is also the broken.  That transforms itself as gift and his way of connection with his flock.

Today we are celebrating the solemnity of the feast of Corpus Christi.  The body and blood of Christ.  Every week hundreds of pilgrims/parishioners come through the doors of our parish church.  Every week, we do not know what they are carrying in their lives.  Some are struggling with big burdens – emotionally, psychologically, physically and spiritually.  Every week they come to be nourished – to be given a word of encouragement.  To be nourished by the word of God.  They yearn to be quenched by the presence of the community and the bread and wine.  The Eucharist does not make sense if it is given only to the strong and those whose lives are unblemished.  The Eucharist is there to be shared with those who hunger and thirst.  Those are the ones who feel that they need it most.  The Eucharist can become a sign of division between those whose lives are lived externally by the laws and regulations of the church and so they can partake and those whose lives for one reason or another had provided challenges on their paths.  The Eucharist is there for the sick and not for the healthy.  Eucharist is food for our journey.

Every week we ALL come together acknowledging our need for mercy and healing as we evaluate our lives at the beginning of Mass.  We ALL stop and listen to God’s word for us and, through the priest’s sermon, we try to make meaning of what is happening in our lives.  We come to pray together for our own needs and for the needs of all.  We also come together to offer ourselves and the gifts and blessings which come from God.  We come to nourish ourselves with the body and blood of Christ which leads us to go out refreshed and nourished to continue the journey with hope.

Next year the Catholic Church in England and Wales is organising a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress called “Adoremus” in Liverpool from the 7th – 9th September 2018.  We are in process of coming up with a Diocesan programme on how we, as Southwark are going to celebrate it.  I wish to ask you to keep this initiative in your prayers.  For Parish and School, may it be a time of deepening our faith and love for the Eucharist both in our gatherings and also in Silent Adoration.  Maybe it will give us a chance to re-evaluate and enhance the experience of the Eucharist for all ages within our parish and school.

“Drop-In” – Evening Surgery

The next Drop-in Surgery will take place on Tuesday 20th June between 5pm – 7pm.  Please call at 281a Crescent Drive.  No appointments are necessary.

Bromley Foodbank requests

The list of priority foods and household goods is: toilet rolls, tinned tomatoes, long life fruit juice, tinned potatoes, desserts (sponge puddings, jellies, instant whips), UHT milk, men's razors and shaving foam.  Please make sure milk and juices are long life.  Thank you to all those who continue to respond so generously.  If you shop at a Tesco store in Bromley Borough please look out for the tokens given at the checkout desk.  Tesco makes a donation to local charities from the proceeds of their plastic bag sales.  Please vote for the Foodbank by putting your token in that box.

Parish Peru Project

The second collection on the weekend of 1-2 July will be for St Helen's parish in Peru.  We normally look to support an overseas cause for two years and as we have now been supporting St Helen's for about two years this will be the final collection for St Helen's.

So far £10,387 has been raised which has helped to fund the building of a chapel, called the Adoration Chapel, at the Family Centre in St Helen's parish and to fund the cost of buying tables and chairs, a projector and screen and a sound system in a small hall in the Family Centre.

Fr Alex the parish priest has expressed his gratitude for the generous help St James’ has given him.

The Justice and Peace Group is looking at a new overseas project to replace the Peru project to propose to the parish.

Communications Pillar

Mass Intentions

Please note that, due to high demand, mass intentions for services up to and including August 2017 are fully booked.  Please bear this in mind when filing your mass intentions, and try to give the office as much lead in time as possible to help ensure you get the dates you would like.

Seeing a Chaplain if You Are Admitted to Hospital

Protecting personal information (data protection) is really important when you become an inpatient in hospital.

So please specifically ask hospital staff to pass on your details to the hospital’s Roman Catholic chaplain as soon as you are admitted if you would like a Chaplain to visit you.

Fr David would always be very happy to visit you too, so please ask a relative or friend to let him know about your admission.  You or they can email Fr David on father.david@stjamespettswood.org, or phone the parish office on 01689 827100.
