Looking Through the Lens of the Gospel

Mark 1:7-11

John gives an example of humility as a person confident in his own role but not seeking to claim to be more than he is. He is able to acknowledge that Jesus is greater. There is a freedom in being able to acknowledge the gifts of others without losing a sense of one’s own giftedness. Recall times when you were able to do this.

The baptism of Jesus was an extraordinary religious experience for him. Something happened that was a major step forward for Jesus in coming to know that he was the beloved Son of God. We all have events in our lives that are milestones along the road of discovering who we are. What have been these milestones for you?

‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’ Bring to mind memories of experiences in which you knew you were the beloved (of God or of another person) and that the one who loved you was well pleased. Bring these experiences to mind with gratitude, knowing that the only proper response to love received is thankfulness. Perhaps you have also given that experience to another.

Let the symbols in the story speak to you: (a) the heavens torn apart; (b) the Spirit coming down; (c) a voice speaking from heaven.

All suggest that barriers between God and us are no more and God is reaching out to us.  When have you had that experience of the closeness of God: perhaps watching a sunset, hearing bird-song, or in prayer?

...Being baptised is never a solitary act of “me”, but is always necessarily a being united with all the others, a being in unity and solidarity with the whole body of Christ, with the whole community of his brothers and sisters. This fact that baptism inserts me into community breaks my isolation. We must remain aware of this in our being Christian.’ (Lectio Divina of Pope Benedict XVI on Baptism, Basilica of St John Lateran, 11 June 2012).

White Flower Appeal – support the Glasgow Midwives

A retiring collection will be after all three Masses this weekend for the White Flower Appeal.

On Wednesday 17th December, news was received of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the case of senior midwives, Mary Doogan and Connie Wood, who have been fighting to defend their right of conscientious objection to abortion.

The court has rejected the request by Mary and Connie to uphold their legal right to exercise their conscientious objection.  For the past twenty years and more, they have worked as midwifery sisters without involvement in abortions, despite the hospital authorities insisting that a late abortion service be provided on the same ward where mothers give birth.

This devastating ruling will not only have an adverse impact on Connie and Mary.  Other midwives will be affected as well as nurses, hospital doctors and even GPs.

The midwives’ legal battle over the past 3 years has cost SPUC £406,000.  These costs have been met by generous contributions from people like you.  Money raised at this year’s appeal will help SPUC pay any costs awarded against Connie and Mary by the court.  The cost of this is still undecided, and apart from helping shoulder this burden, your donation will help fund the future task of seeking to redress this ruling.

Please join the Prayers for Babies campaign today by signing a card and handing it in with your donation after Mass.  In the light of the Supreme Court decision on Connie and Mary your prayers have never been more important.  Many thanks for your support.

Traidcraft stall mini-sale
