Today we are thinking about our commitment to the CAFOD ‘LiveSimply’ project.  As you know we have a very active team in the parish, who are working towards the award, which we hope to gain in July.

The readings today could not be more appropriate.  Jesus tells us that his followers are the ‘salt of the earth’.  The earth is very precious to God, and it should be to us.  That is why it is vital that the human family should live simply, live sustainably, and live in solidarity (with the poor).

It is great that many of our young people are now involved in LiveSimply.

We are hoping to receive the award from CAFOD when the Archbishop visits us on July 13th to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our parish.

We welcome our uniformed groups to 11 am Mass, together with young people from our 7’s and 8’s group; and Susan Longhurst (Deanery Youth Co-ordinator) who will be speaking at 9.15am.

This evening:

7’s and 8’s at 5pm.

Confirmation group at 6.30opm.

Boot Fair – our first, to raise parish funds.  This is open to the community and will be on Saturday March 1st, 11 am – 2pm and will be an indoor fair in the hall.  Entrance 50p, delicious hot snacks available.

Can you please deliver leaflets asap? (bundles in porch) thank you!

Looking Through the Cross:

Paperback by Graham Tomlin (available in our repository £5) and the basis of the PWCT Lent talks 2014. Flyers in porch. Six talks (Mondays) at the Methodist church, presented by the ministers of the PW churches. Mondays starting March 10th (2pm and repeated at 8pm).  An excellent course on the central theme for all Christians; the cross.

(Book not essential but highly recommended.)

Would you be willing to serve as a School Admission Panel Member?  These panels hear appeals from parents who have not been offered places for their children at their preferred school. The Appeal Panels work to a Code of Practice to provide an independent forum for parents and school governing bodies to present their respective cases. Panel decisions are binding on school governing bodies and on parents.

Training will take place during March and April for those appointed to the list.

Please contact the Schools Commission for an application form and further information as soon as possible either by ‘phone (01689-829331)  Or e mail office@educationcommission.org.uk

Have a browse in the repository (church shop)- many articles, including cards, rosaries, etc. and also come in to the adjoining hall for refreshments after the 9.15 and 11 am Masses.

Next Sunday – please bring in items of Mens’ Clothing for the Manna Centre. (Can also be brought in during the week.)

Mass Celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage. If you are celebrating your 1st, 10th, 25th, 40th, 50th or 60+ anniversary this year and would like to attend this very special Mass at St. George’s Cathedral, where you can renew your vows, please fill in sheet in porch, so that the Archbishop can invite you.  This is always a lovely occasion. It is on Saturday 21st June (afternoon).

St.Vincent de Paul receives Big Society award.

David Cameron has recognised the SVP with a Big Society Award. He said:-

I’m delighted to recognise all 10,000 St.Vincent de Paul volunteers, and the staff who support them to do their vital work, with this Big Society Award.   SVP turns concern into action. The Society’s incredible number of volunteers builds on a 200 year history of lending a practical hand to support those in need.

The SVP is active in hundreds of parishes, and our branch here says a big ‘thank you’ to all who bought national raffle tickets over the past two weekends.

The LiveSimply prayer

Compassionate and loving God,

you created the world for us all to share,

a world of beauty and plenty.

Create in us a desire to live simply,

so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,

You gave us responsibility for the earth,

a world of riches and delight.

Create in us a desire to live sustainably,

so that those who follow after us

may enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,

You give us the capacity to change,

to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,

so that the pillars of injustice crumble

and those now crushed are set free.

Amen.
