A warm welcome is extended to all our Parishioners, new members of our Parish and any visitors who are here with us this weekend.

Fr David writes......

One of my favourite movies of all times is called “Chocolat”.  It is a story situated in a small old fashioned tranquil French village.  The village church is central to the life of the residents led by the Major – a good man whose life is governed though by the rules and regulations of the Catholic Church.  He also makes sure that all the parishioners adhere to what is required by the law.  One day out of the blue, this young single mother comes into the village and opens up a chocolaterie during the Lenten season.  Of course this brings a lot of controversy in the village.  The story evolves into a theological analysis of what makes an alive faith community.  The church in the village becomes more and more a place where the spirituality provided to them disempowers the residents and disconnects them from what is happening in their own personal lives.  God is presented to them as distant and also very cold and judgemental.  Whilst the chocolaterie becomes a place of life giving experiences to those who had the courage to be different.  The shop becomes a place of welcome, where people are free to share their own stories, their own struggles.  Through the non judgemental listening and compassionate ear of Vianne, the owner of the chocolaterie - the shop becomes a Place of Eucharist – where people are empowered, transformed and liberated.  The Eucharist is not for the strong, self righteous and perfect.  The Eucharist is nourishment first and foremost for those who feel vulnerable and spiritually sick.  The Eucharist makes us humble.  None of us is worthy of this gift.  Who has the right to receive communion has become a very controversial issue within our church especially during the Synod of the Family which is going to be concluded this coming October.  There is a division even within the hierarchy of the church about who is allowed to participate in communion.  There are those who are very adamant to remain as always allowing only those who are living their lives according to the rules and regulations of the church who have a right to take communion, whilst others are trying to push the boundaries and helping us to think more inclusively and outside the box.  The Eucharist is nourishment on our spiritual journey.  However, it can become also a way of power and control – deciding who is worthy and who is not worthy.  It can be a sign of division as much as it can become a sign of communion.  Let us continue to pray for the Synod of the Family so that the Spirit of God may work powerfully for the benefit of all.  And all people would feel heard and respected and included.  In a way we are all Pilgrim people as Vatican Council II and our beloved Pope Francis keeps on reminding us.  I also wish to thank you for your welcome, cards and gifts for my induction on Sunday.  I thought it was really a great day of celebration for the whole parish, and a great witness of a very welcoming parish.  I am so blessed to be part of it now.

Zambuko House plant sale

This will take place after all Masses this weekend.  The sale will be set up in the yard next to the hall.  You can get there through the hall or via the main car park.  There will be gardening experts on hand to answer any questions and young people will help with the wrapping and carrying to your car.

All the plants have been generously donated by members of the parish.  The proceeds will all go to the Jesuit Missions Zambuko House charity for young people in Zimbabwe.

Parish Social Evening

This Saturday 6th June, the Social Centre will be open after Mass.  All are welcome to come in for a drink or two.  While you are there why not visit the plant sale as well!

Mass Intentions

Please be aware that requests for Mass Intentions should be made with the envelopes provided in the church porch.  Requests for dates cannot be guaranteed as the diary is often full 5-6 weeks in advance.  Please therefore put your requests in as early as possible.

Missio – Red Box

Many members of our community have a Red Box in their homes.  It’s a way we support the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission and the Mill Hill Missionaries, Britain’s own missionary society.  We’re holding a special collection for those whose Red Box may not have been opened for a while.  This will take place over the weekends of 20th/21st and 27th/28th June.  So if you have a box that’s lurking on top of the fridge or behind some books, please bring it along on one of the weekends and we will empty it.  Thank you to everyone who is a Red Box member.

Bromley Foodbank

is most grateful for all donations put in the box at back of church.  The J&P Group empties the box almost every week and delivers to the Foodbank once a month.  Please keep donating because the needs are great.

Fun Run and Garden Party - 14th June

Taizé Trip

This summer, Bromley Deanery would like to take a group of young people (18-29) to the Community of Taizé in France, for the 75th anniversary of the Community.  The trip will be from 8th – 17th August and will cost in the region of £200.  For more details please contact Zosia Bajorek at taize@stjamespettswood.org.

Weekly Catholic publications

These are for sale on a table by the Baptistery.  You will find the Catholic Herald (£2), Catholic Universe (£1.30), Catholic Times (£1.30) and The Tablet (£3) on sale.  Please support the Catholic press and hear our side of the ‘story’.  Sales at St James’ are not good and we will have to terminate our order if parishioners don’t buy the papers.

Once a month you will also find The Pilgrim which is produced by the diocese for all its parishes.  The parish pays for these so you should take a copy free of charge.

CAFOD Climate Change Campaign

Members of our Justice & Peace Group will be attending a mass Parliamentary Lobby on Wednesday 17th June which will be engaging with MPs outside the House of Commons. They will be asking them to press the government for more action to address this problem, especially using its influence at the UN Paris talks in December.  CAFOD has asked parishes to make bunting which declares what we love and might lose if this problem is not addressed quickly.  The bunting will be on display at the Fun Run party and we want as many of you as possible to write on the blank pennants. Our Guides are helping to make more bunting.  Read about CAFOD's involvement with the lobby.

“Bless the Lord, O my Soul”

is our special event for music-lovers. This will be taking place on Saturday 27 June between 10.00am – 3.00pm in the hall, with lunch included. You are very welcome to attend – please sign up with a member of the Choir after Mass, so we know numbers. We look forward to welcoming you there!
