We celebrate CAFOD Harvest Fast Day- hopefully we all remembered to fast last Friday- and have brought in an offering today.  Please use envelope- and Gift Aid if possible.

We give thanks as we celebrate Harvest Festival- many thanks to those who have brought food for the Manna Centre (this week please if you have forgotten).

We rejoice in creation as we remind ourselves that we are a LiveSimply parish.

That’s quite a lot! And we had the Autumn Festival yesterday!  Many thanks to the organising team, and to the many parishioners and friends who helped to make this a fantastic day. Full report next week (and possibly on-line this week.)

This evening (Sunday):

7’s and 8’s - 5pm-6.15.pm (with optional Mass at 6.30pm, ending 7.15pm, for all our young people in school years 7 and 8).

Confirmation Group.  6.30.pm-8.30.pm

In two weeks time all the churches in PW are coming together to celebrate One World Week. There are two key events both in the Methodist Church (bottom of Lakeswood Rd).

1.      An exhibition on Saturday Oct.19th (10am-1pm) by all the churches of their social/worldwide involvement and outreach. In our case we shall be advertising CAFOD, Manna Centre, LiveSimply, Traidcraft, etc. A great opportunity to invite hundreds of Saturday shoppers to come in, have a coffee and see how the churches are working towards One World.

2.      An informal act of worship on Sunday Oct.20th at 4pm (led by our own folk choir) with a speaker from Christian Aid.  Followed by shared high tea (please bring something).

Both these events will be celebratory and Juliette- my colleague at the Methodist church- is looking forward to welcoming all St. James’ people!

Monday: Pondering the Word.  A quiet session with next Sunday’s gospel – 11am-12 noon (church).

All warmly welcome if you are around at this time.

Next weekend:

Cleaners.  School year 1 parents please (Saturday, 10.30am-11.30am). Many thanks to those who cleaned this weekend.

We present our confirmation group to the congregation at 11 am.

2nd collection – for the Needs of the Diocese (enabling the Archbishop to make grants to some of the smaller parishes in the Diocese).

Sister Sheila Barrett, who led our recent Quiet Day (September 7th) has kindly provided us with her speaking notes from the opening session of the Day. We are happy to provide a copy of these notes, together with a copy of other handouts from the Day, to anyone who is interested.  If you would like copies, please indicate this by writing your name clearly on the sign-up sheet in the church lobby.

Due to demand another Quiet Day will be held here (at St. James) on Saturday March 29th.

October is a special month of devotion to the Blessed Mother of Christ.  Today (Sunday) is also known as Rosary Sunday.  Do you have a rosary - and pray it?  A simple and effective means of contemplative prayer.(see p.32 ff in ‘A Simple Prayer Book’)

The hall toilets are now operational! They are an excellent improvement to our buildings- many thanks to all parishioners, and to our builders. Please ensure that they are kept in this pristine state.

Eco tip of the week

Household cleaning – the LiveSimply way

For chopping boards, rub a slice of lemon over the board to disinfect the surface and remove strong smells such as fish or onions.

‘Choices’ by Chris Polhill

Oil spoils.

Coke chokes.

Gas-alas,

all will end.

Use

the sun or we’re done;

the wind or we’ve sinned;

the wave that can save;

the tree growing free.

All ever-present.

God-made,

God-given.

The LiveSimply prayer

Compassionate and loving God,

you created the world for us all to share,

a world of beauty and plenty.

Create in us a desire to live simply,

so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,

You gave us responsibility for the earth,

a world of riches and delight.

Create in us a desire to live sustainably,

so that those who follow after us

may enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,

You give us the capacity to change,

to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,

so that the pillars of injustice crumble

and those now crushed are set free.

Amen.            Linda Jones / CAFOD
