In today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells us: “You are the light of the world ..... your light must shine in the sight of everyone, so that, seeing your good works they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.”

We need confidence in our faith and the sad fact is that many of us do not have this confidence.  There is an urgent need to address this, and Pope Benedict quoted Blessed John Henry Newman in his homily at Cofton Park last September.

“I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but people who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it.”

All of us should make time for daily prayer and spiritual reading of some kind – not heavy theological books but the Scriptures and our Catholic history, and in particular the lives of the saints.

We fully intend to start a parish library and many of you have given books for this, and I am prepared to loan many of my own books.  This should help us all to grow in confidence in our faith, to “shine” – but also to ensure that others may shine and give praise to God.

Moving Mountains

Only have faith...

But that’s the problem;

How much do we need?

What if we haven’t enough?

The questions miss the point:

Faith is not a commodity

To be possessed,

A bargaining counter

Used to get things done;

Faith is the orientation

Of our lives, a gift

Which shifts perceptions,

Takes us deeper

Into the mystery of God.
