Seeing your Life Through the Lens of the Gospels

Matthew 21:33-43

The target audience of this parable is the Jewish chief priests and elders who are portrayed here as rejecting Jesus and his teaching, and as a consequence losing out on what God was offering them.  It is a story of opportunity for life presented, and rejected; and they lose out in the process.  How important have you found it to recognise and accept opportunities for growth, development and new life when these were presented to you?

The parable is also a cautionary tale about the destructive effects of greed – doing violence to the rights of others and eventually destroying the greedy themselves.  What attitude towards possessions has helped you to be at peace in yourself and at peace with others?

The vineyard of the Lord is an image for God’s people.  As we look at the vineyard we have been given we can ask ourselves ‘are we good tenants?’ Recall times when you have been a good tenant, and reached out caringly for those around you.

The landowner in the story is angered at the behaviour of the tenants.  In his anger he takes steps to pass the care of his vineyard on to others.  When have you allowed your anger at injustice, or at the abuse of people to move you to take steps to redress the injustice? When have you used the energy of your anger to motivate you to take a positive step?

…..The Second Reading today speaks of the significance of what we allow to enter our minds.  It encourages us to feed our minds with whatever is true; whatever is lovely; whatever is admirable; whatever is excellent.  And it offers the promise that the peace of God will ‘guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.’ Let us remember today all for whom the daily thoughts of the mind are a constant struggle.

The second collection today is for CAFOD’s Harvest Fast Day, which was on Friday 3rd October.

Did you remember to make a ‘place at your table’ on Friday?

Every day, one person in every eight of the world’s population doesn’t have enough food to eat.  So please give generously today.

Thank you.

October Devotions in honour of Our Lady start today at 4pm.

Traditionally these devotions, made up of Rosary, Benediction and Marian hymns, take place in October and May.  With a view to finding out if there is a ‘demand’ we’ll start today and continue each Sunday of October if sufficient interest is shown.

Today we welcome through Holy Baptism twins Olivia and Isabelle Higgins-Smith; and Francesca Lim.

The Autumn Fayre

(In my case), based on hope rather than experience, I want to say a very sincere Thank You to everyone for having made a great social and financial success of our Autumn Fair.  I heard the planning happening and saw the raw materials arriving and being arranged.  As we go to print I’m looking forward to being part of the Fair, and expect to enjoy it.  So, very many thanks to so many of you for the planning, preparing and producing our 2014 Autumn Fair.  TC

The Parish Maintenance Fund

What with changes and the summer recess you might be forgiven for concluding that everything about ‘maintenance’ except its Collection had ground to a permanent halt!  Well, not so.

Before ‘going on’, I must draw your attention to the fact that several essential, though not very glamorous projects have been successfully completed: The Hall’s roof and toilets have been renewed.  The flat roofing from over the Lady Chapel all the way round to over the ‘Pre-school’ area has been upgraded, too.  And as you know that cost ‘a bob or two’.  The hedging and trees from ‘out the back’, leylandii & co., are also ‘for it’.  Professionals are needed to do that = another bob or two! Hopefully much of it can be then maintained by Volunteers.  (So Watch Out!!)

Now and the Immediate Future

The Hall’s refurbishment and essential re-wiring is in process of being reconsidered and reinstated.  There is water seepage and ingress by the Lady Chapel wall, store-room and shop.  This too, is urgently in need of attention.  Initial work to stop water ingress in the Belfry has been commissioned, as has work on renewing the flat-roofed area of the House.  Phew!!! So whatever other Second Collections may ‘go by the board’, surely you’d agree this one oughtn’t.  TC

Annual Mass Count

Each weekend for the month of October, would tellers please count and record the numbers at each and every Mass on the forms provided.  Thank you.
