Mission

Today’s gospel sees Jesus sending out his disciples in pairs to prepare various towns and communities for his own visit.  Jesus and his disciples believed that they had a mission to fulfil. One contemporary writer puts it like this

“So in its totality, the Church is nothing less than the mission of God. God so loves that he sends Jesus.  Jesus in turn, so loves us that he also sends the apostles in the same way as the Father had originally sent him..... The apostolic mission in all its fullness is the work of the church in every age.”

So this is our mission - to make real the love of God as revealed in Jesus.  Everything we do as a Catholic Christian community must be based on this idea of being “sent” – this is actually what apostolic means.

In the diocese, the chief apostle (bishop) sends workers (priests and deacons) to labour in the cause of the gospel.  In the same way, many of you are willing to be sent e.g. taking communion to the housebound, being responsible for crucial areas of our church life, and in many other ways.

We are also, I believe, sent to bring the Good News to all the people of our parish- nothing less. May the Lord give us a rich harvest as we minister together in his name.
