Christmas at St James the Great 2014

Well, we have celebrated the Birthday of Our Lord with great joy and happiness and so we should.  His life gives meaning, purpose and hope to our lives.  Because he took on human flesh, he understands our weaknesses, our fears, our hopes – what pleases us – what makes us happy – everything about us.  And so your joyous and happy celebration was fitting indeed.

But we owe thanks to ever so many individual members of the parish for all they did to enable and enhance our celebrations:  not least of all the children and the huge heap of gifts they brought.  The trees, the flowers, the crib and the entire church looked lovely.  Servers, choirs, instrumentalists and everyone exercising ministries were great!!

You “exuded” an aura of welcome which many of our visitors commented upon, to me at any rate.  I certainly enjoyed my first Christmas among you:  Thank you for seeing to that and many thanks for your great generosity too.  Fr. Tom

The Christmas Gifts and Toys Procession

Your generous participation and the way in which the children deposited their little presents around the trees added wonderfully to the spirit of Christmas here.  At least 14 sacks full of gifts were collected by the Refuge people and they have asked me to convey their thanks and appreciation to everyone:  Thanks and well done! Everyone.

Crib Offerings

All monies in the votive candle stands during the Christmas season will be going to the “Friends of the Holy Land”.  This charity helps support poor Christian families there, so that they can have a secure future and remain as a Christian presence in the land where Our Lord was born.  More details on poster in porch.

White Flower Appeal – support the Glasgow Midwives

A retiring collection will be taken next weekend at all three Masses for the White Flower Appeal.

Two midwives have endured seven long years of struggle to secure their legal right NOT to take part in abortions.  But action taken by their employer now threatens their right to conscientious objection.  In November 2014, the Supreme Court heard their case – its ruling is expected in early 2015.

Should the court decide against the midwives, they would be forced out of their jobs.  Money raised at this year’s appeal will help SPUC pay any costs awarded against the midwives by the court.  Donations will also help fund other pro-life work too.

Would you like to volunteer with CAFOD

CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development are looking for volunteers in this area.  They are especially looking for volunteers who could give talks at Mass, encourage others to campaign or speak to children and young people about CAFOD’s work.  Training will be provided, beginning with an induction workshop on Saturday 24 January 2015.

Please contact CAFOD Southwark on 0208 466 9901 or southwark@cafod.org.uk for more details and application form.
