The theme of the readings today is waiting. Isaiah exhorts the Jewish people to prepare for the coming (‘advent’) of the Lord - and this is fulfilled in the gospel reading by John the Baptist, who prepares the people for the coming of the Messiah.  And St. Peter (2nd reading) asks us to be patient as we wait - God knows what he is about and his time scale is very different to ours!

Patience and waiting - we need both of these when we read the scriptures and when we pray on our own.

The Welsh poet R S Thomas (1913-2000) expresses all this in his poem ‘Kneeling.’

Moments of great calm,

Kneeling before an altar

Of wood in a stone church

In summer, waiting for the God

To speak; the air a staircase

For silence; the sun’s light

Ringing me, as though I acted

A great role.  And the audiences

Still; all that close throng

Of spirits waiting, as I,

For the message.

Prompt me, God;

But not yet.  When I speak,

Though it be you who speak

Through me, something is lost.

The meaning is in the waiting.
