We start November with All Saints, followed by All Souls, and then a month of especially remembering those who have died.  It is the month of the Four Last Things - Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell.  Occasionally the church proclaims one of its members a saint- someone who has opened his or her life to the grace of God throughout their life, and who now lives with God in the glory of his kingdom.

But the church has never proclaimed that anyone is in hell.  The church - that is, the Christian community to which, through baptism, we belong - leaves the final judgement to God alone, and prays constantly that every single human being will attain the glory of Heaven.  We see this in eucharistic prayer 4, when we ask God to....’remember all the dead, whose faith is known to you alone.’  Only God knows what is really in a person.  Even in our closest relationships, we are still something of a mystery to each other!

Jesus apparently knew what was inside Zacchaeus  (today’s gospel).  A crooked tax collector yes; a little man - yes; a wealthy man- yes.  But Jesus saw much, much more in him than this.  And Zacchaeus was anxious to see Jesus - I wonder why?  But Jesus makes the first move (as always)- he invites himself to supper!  The little man nearly falls out of the tree with astonishment and joy!  And in Jesus’ presence, he voluntarily owns up to his guilt (theft).  No angry questions from Jesus, no recriminations - just a meal together.  At last Zacchaeus has met someone he can trust absolutely, who accepts him for who he is - warts and all.  And so, says Jesus, he is ‘saved’ (‘salvation’).

Perhaps Heaven will be a bit like this - the Lord graciously inviting us to join him in a meal.

How would we feel? What would we do? The great thing is that this is what we do each time we receive Holy Communion - Jesus inviting us to his Table, accepting us, just as we are, in all our lostness and brokenness.

Are we, like Zacchaeus, overjoyed ?  Is this salvation for us?  Because...’we are an Easter people, and alleluia is our song!’  (St. Augustine.)

‘Lord, you will show me the path of life and fill me with joy in your presence.

(Today’s communion antiphon.)
