Today we celebrate the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (often known as ‘Candlemas’).  From infancy, Jesus is recognised as the one who will save not only his own people (Israel) but who will also be a ‘light to lighten the gentiles’ (i.e. us.- and the entire human family).  But he will not be universally recognised or accepted, and this will eventually cause his mother great grief..........

But the Presentation itself is a moment of great joy, and we, as a Catholic community, rejoice today as we welcome, through Holy Baptism (6pm) Phi-Anh Kira Patel (10 mths), her parents Quyen and Yogendra and godparents Giovanni and Heledd, at 9.15am we welcome Jacob Ethan Gregory (1 yr 4 mths), his parents Susana and Martin and godparents Gina and Carl, at 11am we welcome Delphine Lily Coppolo Anderson (4 mths), her parents Gia and Robert and godparents Ross and Sharlene.

As the baptismal candles are presented, we pray that these children may grow and mature into the likeness of the risen Christ. Alleluia!

Would you like to work with the young people of our parish?

If you feel this might be your ‘thing’ please have a word with me after Mass TODAY. Our Bromley Deanery has appointed and employed Susan Longhurst (a parishioner of Beckenham Hill) to co-ordinate a new and exciting training course for those who work with, or who might like to work with young people in our parishes. Susan is coming to speak to us next Monday (10th) at 8pm (small hall) about what is proposed and I hope there will be a good turnout (ending by 9pm.).

I have invited most of our present leaders (apologies if I have omitted anyone)- but we need many more people to offer for this ministry. So do see me after Mass. The meeting next Monday in no way obliges anyone but I hope that people will come and hear what is involved.  Our work with teenagers within the community of the church is, I believe one of the most pressing and crucial issues of our time, and for our parish.

‘Looking Through the Cross’ is the title of a short paperback by Graham Tomlin and is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book for 2014. (ISBN -978-1-4081-8847-7(Bloomsbury) (£9.99 but much cheaper on Amazon). (A few on sale in our repository - the church ‘shop’ at the back of church.

It is excellent and I recommend it.  It is going to be the basis of our Lent course (six Mondays starting March 10th).  Full details next week (and on your ‘parish events’ sheet) but it would enrich the sessions if people had read it first (although this is not mandatory).

From the blurb:

‘Everything looks different in the world when seen through the lens of the Cross.... shedding remarkable light on familiar themes such as power, evil, failure, suffering and reconciliation........the meaning of the cross in a complex and turbulent world.’

Every blessing.      Fr. Bryan.

Monday:

Pondering the Word (11am-12 noon).  A quiet and reflective look at next Sunday’s gospel reading.  Everyone welcome (in back corridor of church).

Craft and Games in the hall at 1.30pm. (including table tennis!) again, everyone most welcome.

Tuesday:

Wine and Nibbles at 8pm (hall) to hear about fundraising in the parish over the past year, and for the rest of 2014!  Let’s have a good turn-out- and do come along with some ideas!

We appreciate week evenings can be difficult for working families but if one member could come.........(Will not end late.)

Wednesday:

Mass in St James’ School (NOT here) at 9am

Hopefully all Wednesday regulars will be there.  It is such an encouragement to the children and also strengthens our excellent relationship with the school.  Coffee in staff room.

Thursday:

Welcomers’ meeting, 8pm, meeting room. For all Welcomers and also for any who would like to be a Welcomer at Mass.

Friday:

Mums and tots at 1.30pm (until 3pm). All most welcome.

Saturday:

Church cleaning (parents of children in school year 2 please.) (10am-11am).

‘Dad and Me’- meeting for any Dads who would like to get this group going, Meeting Room, 10am (for about 45 mins).  A monthly session is proposed; Dads with their young children - possibly Saturday mornings.  Dads please support!!

Advance Notice:

A poem for Candlemas

by Ruth Burgess.

Like Simeon, may I grow old in hope and wonder.

Like Anna, may I be in love with you all my days.

May I be open to truth, open to surprises.

May I let your Spirit into my life.

May I let your justice change my behaviour.

May I live in the brightness of your joy.
