Today we celebrate the Ascension of Christ into Heaven.

At the end of the gospel reading (the very end of St. Matthew) Jesus gives the ‘missionary mandate’

‘Go....make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...and teach them to observe all the commands i gave you.’

Today we fulfil that command by baptising three babies, (see details below). We pray that, helped by their parents, godparents, and the parish community, they will mature into adult Christians.

But Ascension also focuses on the communication of the gospel to the whole of the human community and we have a second collection today for the Catholic Communications network. It is important that we heed Jesus’ command and get his message ‘out there’, through the media and through personal encounter. Please be generous- and take a card flyer.

(If you were not here last Sunday you might like to make a donation to the Maintenance Fund as well. Just use one of the white envelopes, and if you are a Gift Aider write your number on the envelope.)

We welcome through Holy Baptism; (6pm) Olivia Charlotte D’Cruz, her parents Caroline and Neal and godparents Bernadette and Robert; (9.15am) Jack Patrick Millar, his parents Mary and John and godparents Sarah and Phillip; (11am) Olive Elizabeth Rose Mallin, her parents Rosanna and Lee and godparents Kelly and Lucy.

If you are not a Catholic but would like to know something about the Faith, you are warmly welcome to a short (45min) session on Tuesday June 10th at 8.0.pm (in the meeting room between church and hall- enter through church.) This is an informal introductory meeting and Catholic spouses are most welcome too.

Just a reminder to Eucharistic Ministers to book into one of the Days of Reflection at Emmaus, West Wickham;  and Catechists- please let me know about June 28th at the cathedral (in a day or so, please). Letters about both these events on table in rear corridor.

Important meeting for ALL readers and ministers. Wednesday 11th June – readers at 7.30pm and ministers at 8.30pm (including new people in both groups).  Would you please let me know if you cannot manage this meeting- thank you.  (Both meetings in church.)

Next Sunday –Pentecost:

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES

Celebrations, the Fun Run, and Farewells, in July

We are looking ahead to a busy and eventful July.

On Sunday 13th July we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary as a parish in Petts Wood.

The Archbishop will be here to celebrate with us, as will our new parish priest Fr. Tom; and we also will be receiving a LiveSimply award from CAFOD (hopefully!)  It’s a big day!

To help celebrate these happy events, a light buffet lunch will be available after the 11am Mass so if you wish to stay for this, please be sure that you sign the list in the porch since we must know the numbers who will be attending.

On Sunday 20th July we will be holding our Parish FunRun. Please look out for more information coming from the FunRun team.

There will be a Garden Party during the afternoon of 20th July to celebrate the FunRun and to say farewell to Fr. Bryan and Teresa.

Drinks in the hall and garden will be available from about 12noon (after Mass) and burgers, hot dogs and salads will be available to buy from 1pm.  We expect the FunRunners to return to the garden from about 1.30pm and prizes and presentations will be made around 2.30pm.  Lunch will continue to be available after this time.

You can also bring your own picnic if you prefer.

Please sign the list in the porch if you want to attend the Garden Party on 20th and buy your lunch as we will need numbers for catering.

So please plan to come along and enjoy all of these parish events and please sign the lists in the porch if you would like to have lunch!

The next Foodbank collection at Tesco is on the horizon:

Friday 4th – Sunday 6th July

Our aim is to cover full days Friday and Saturday but on Sunday run a much reduced operation because many volunteers will want to attend church.

As before, we are covering Orpington, Bromley (Homesdale Road) and Riverhead.

Please could you let me know your availability both in terms of the number of hours and when in the weekend you could do them; e.g. “I could do 3 hours in 2 slots at Riverhead or Orpington Friday from 3:00 pm and Saturday all day”. Collating the information into rotas to ensure an appropriate number of people at all sites at all times is complicated so please be as flexible as possible with timings.

The minimum age limit is about 8 years old and the maximum 88 years old! The ability to smile and hand out leaflets is all that matters. There will be heavier lifting jobs for those who wish to flex their pecs – this saves the exorbitant cost of membership at a gym!

From Rev. Paul Hough:

The Southwark Brethren is a longstanding charity which helps sick and retired Priests who are in need. We thank you for your continuous generosity in the past and ask for your help again this year. Please send donations to: Rev. Paul Hough, St.Elphege’s  Presbytery, 120, Stafford Road, Wallington, Surrey SM6 9AY.

Last year we were able to give £1300 each to 31 Priests in the Diocese of Southwark and Arundel and Brighton, and also help 2 working Priests who had serious sickness, to help their situation. In addition, we have a Gift Aid Scheme for those who pay tax and we thank the lay people who have joined by applying for a Gift Aid form.

There is quite a lot going on throughout June and July- do make a note of times/dates etc. and remember that everything is also usually on the website: www.stjamespettswood.org

Be kind to our planet

One of the LiveSimply promises was to publish ideas of how we can be more environmentally friendly.  Each week Briefly will include one simple item, it might be a suggestion, a fact, or just a thought.  They are meant to be thought provoking and not patronising!  Ideas from children are encouraged – please send suggestions to livesimply@stjamespettswood.org.  Here is this week’s:
