Fr Tom writes.....

As you already know I will be retiring as your parish priest this weekend.

I spotted very early on what a great community you are and it has been a joy to get to know you all.  What I have found here is a wonderfully active and involved community and many people who regularly contribute to the wellbeing of this parish.  I sincerely thank you all for all that you have done and are doing.

However what I underestimated at the start was just how busy and wide-ranging my role and responsibilities here would be.  In particular, the extensive and overlapping property refurbishment, tenancy issues, Deanery involvement, School Governorship, Ecumenical relations and ever so many other matters have been very complex and draining to deal with.  The simple truth is that, at my age, I simply haven’t been able to find the necessary energy to contribute, as fully as I would like to, and, as is needed here.

I have fully discussed my plans to retire with both Archbishop Peter and Bishop Pat.  The Archbishop has accepted my retirement and understands my reasons.  And so we have agreed that Sunday 19th April will be my last here as Parish Priest of St James the Great, Petts Wood.

I will be retiring to Ireland and will be living near to my family.  I am fortunate in that I have a very supportive family and use of a house on my brother’s property.  After a period of rest I hope to be able to contribute as supply priest to local parishes there and certainly here in this Diocese too.

There will be a social event in the parish hall after the 11.00am Mass today and you are all invited to come along.

Your new parish priest will be Fr. David Camilleri who has served in several parishes in the Diocese.  He has recently returned from a Sabbatical in Rome and will take up residence here towards the end of April.  Fr. Barry Hughes, who has been a constant help and support will be on hand during the handover period.

I would like to state that you all made me feel very welcome, and please be assured that nothing more could have been done by anyone here.  This is a very busy, dynamic parish and time has, quite simply, caught up with me!

I will keep you all in my prayers and again, many thanks for everything.

P.S. If you wish to contact me, my details are available via the Parish Office.
