The LiveSimply prayer

Compassionate and loving God,

you created the world for us all to share,

a world of beauty and plenty.

Create in us a desire to live simply,

so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,

You gave us responsibility for the earth,

a world of riches and delight.

Create in us a desire to live sustainably,

so that those who follow after us

may enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,

You give us the capacity to change,

to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,

so that the pillars of injustice crumble

and those now crushed are set free.

Amen.

The garden project

The hedging saplings were planted in November – they seem to have survived.

Joe Falzon needs a friendly builder/bricklayer who will volunteer to help with the paving and raised beds

It would be nice to have a mix of personnel helping in the spring now most of the heavy work has been done.

Perhaps we should ask if the Brownies and Cubs would like to get involved with planting the raised beds.  But it’s for Joe’s team to decide if they think it’s appropriate.  It might even be a way of involving the school as they have a lot of experience with their gardening.

Suzanne is happy to run another bingo session to raise money for garden.

After the award we could consider growing vegetables in the parish garden for sale after Mass.

Guides LiveSimply Lenten Lunch

Mary and Roger met with Julia and Wendy but sadly the planned date was lost because Roger hadn’t booked the hall.  Mary please describeNow scheduled for Palm Sunday.  Open to whole parish and our help will be needed.  Please note the date Sunday 13th April.  Relevant notes:

1) The menu will most probably be bread, cheese, veg soup and water. Perhaps we could add Fairtrade bananas.

2) Julia will do some costing.

3) Between us we can probably make the bread at home (sad person that I am, I happen to know it costs 52p for each loaf from our breadmaker)

4) We can show the Kainmari video sent from CAFOD on a loop and maybe get other CAFOD films.

5) Any profit made could be donated to the Bromley Foodbank, or any charity chosen by the Guides perhaps.

Liturgy

Now that the 7s&8s have broken the ice for young people, maybe we can try another group – e.g. Scouts.  Also need Susan to get more involved with one Mass.  Perhaps a thanksgiving one on the last LiveSimply weekend before the award.  The hymn needs more use and to be better announced.  Must make sure all the hymn books have it still as some are falling out.

Carbon reduction of energy supply

We have discussed doing a survey of parishioners to see if we can count any of their household energy savings.  What do people feel about this (too many surveys?)  Roger would draft something out for this after Christmas – he hasn’t so far.

Austin started switching to Good Energy whose electricity is 100% renewable.  We get to 12% at stage 3 of his plan but haven’t managed to find out where he’s got to.  Bearing in mind this is a sort of cheat and hasn’t made any impact on the parish, I feel we ought to have some dialogue with parishioners.

Forest School

Successful morning and we were thanked by Mrs Bosher.  Thanks for organising it Linda and to John for the practical arrangements.

LiveSimply and Autumn Festival synergy

Using notes and ideas from Mary, I have prepared a page which will go on the website and can be shown to the assessors.

Tree planting scheme

We have hung the 38th leaf on our tree but this seems to have gone very quiet despite forms being taken.

Linda had put out the leaflets at the Seniors’ Christmas lunch and at tea after the Bereavement Mass.  We didn’t get any response.  I am going to try the 1st Holy Communion class leader again as it’s now Clare Wakefield.  Fr Bryan doesn’t seem to be handing info to baptism parents either.

Recycling and waste management (properly monitored system)

Done: Mary I and Roger need to meet at the hall to discuss with stakeholders what internal bins and signage are required

Progress being made on this action and we’ll report our proposals soon.  Fr Bryan has approved some expenditure but we will need more.  Mary will cost out what we discussed earlier this evening.

Not done: Roger showed a CAFOD envelope which could be used to post used printer cartridges and old mobile phones.  It was agreed that we should hand these out after Mass one weekend.

Brownie planting project

Tree and bulb planting is almost organised for Jubilee Park.  Brownies are collecting £100/150 and the tree will be planted by Bromley Council with a small ceremony.  I shall be on hand to take photos.

Environment web pages

Sorry no progress despite Mary giving me lots of hints.

Craft Club household hints

Linda will be preparing further hints following up the tips we have been publishing in Briefly since late September.  It was suggested that church and hall cleaning should be made more eco-friendly.  There doesn’t seem to be any one person responsible for buying cleaning products and hence a mixture of things is being purchased as when needed.  We need to talk to people like Frank Simon to set up a properly managed purchasing policy.  This is the only way we can ensure that only eco-products are used.

Have now discovered there is a lady who cleans (not Frank now) – Dawn.  She must be the person who deals with cleaning products.  We need to catch up with her.

Connect2: Bangladesh

There is a video to show when we get an opportunity.  J&P will be discussing new proposals for supporting an overseas community at its next meeting.

“Hungry for Change” weekend very successful

Thanks to everyone who helped us to get 420 postcards signed.  CAFOD staff were delighted and I had to describe what we’d done at one of their meetings recently.

Younger parishioners’ contribution to liturgy

We drew a total blank with the Confirmation class but 7s&8s stepped in to provide bidding prayers thanks to Mary O'M and Quyen.  See the prayers and Quyen’s comment.  The congregation may not have registered or realised that the readers didn’t represent the uniformed groups but the important thing is that the 7s&8s are now LiveSimply supporters.

Our original vision had been:

It was even suggested that we should have one LiveSimply weekend dedicated to the young people and have them devise and plan the specific parts of liturgy (theme, short talk/presentation, bidding prayers, be the readers).

It would be wonderful if all three Masses could be covered with contributions from each age group.

Brownie contributions

Suzanne Horner continues to be very supportive.

9th March – hopefully when Fr Bryan will present them with their World Issues badge.  It corresponds with the end of Fairtrade Fortnight so maybe we can ask Suzanne to bring that in as well.  That weekend is LiveSimply theme and we have the Traidcraft stall.

Said previously: World Issues is a major Brownie badge and she hopes it will be presented by Fr Bryan at Mass and the children will ‘perform’ in the sanctuary at a Parade Mass in early 2014.

Mary O’M would follow up with Suzanne on the above and enquire about the intention to sponsor a child overseas.

Traidcraft and Foodbank

Traidcraft stalls in 2013 had sufficient sales for Diana and Geraldine to donate profits of £300 to CAFOD.  Foodbank total stands at 1.9 tons since we started just over 2 years ago.
