LiveSimply prayer

Compassionate and loving God,

you created the world for us all to share,

a world of beauty and plenty.

Create in us a desire to live simply,

so that our lives may reflect your generosity.

Creator God,

You gave us responsibility for the earth,

a world of riches and delight.

Create in us a desire to live sustainably,

so that those who follow after us

may enjoy the fruits of your creation.

God of peace and justice,

You give us the capacity to change,

to bring about a world that mirrors your wisdom.

Create in us a desire to act in solidarity,

so that the pillars of injustice crumble

and those now crushed are set free.

Amen.

Garden

First planning meeting last night – Teresa can report perhaps

Joe reported back this morning:

It was very encouraging from everyone involved, given the huge task and quick turnaround required for this project. We will be starting work on clearing the site next month, so I'll get the first draft plans ready for early March and will circulate them asap.

The question of initial funds did come up as we will need to purchase some bio-degradeable weedkiller for this first stage. We'll also need your help, if possible, on contacts for the building aspects of the garden. Hard landscaping materials will be the most expensive part of this project which we will obviously be very mindful of when planning. We believe that the planting could be self funding with donations and selective outside sourcing.

Energy

Fr Bryan and Teresa are re-organising the Presbytery and adjoining house (281A) which has been used as an office and parish meeting facility.  By squeezing things up, and with no small sacrifice to themselves, the parish will be able to rent out 281A and make steady income.  The amount of work involved has been considerable and the parish should be extremely grateful.  It is a very generous response to the difficult financial state we find ourselves in.  If only the rest of us could do a tiny bit more ourselves it would make all the difference.

As a consequence of this, the parish will reduce its carbon footprint.  I haven’t updated the calculations yet but it could get us most of the way to the 10% we promised.

Supporting actions

Live Simply

Ecumenical nature walk and picnic

I sent Doreen some ideas for this but told her not to spend any time until the Week of Accompanied Prayer is over.

Loaves and fishes picnic

Nick and Susan thought this would be a good one for the Cubs to run.  (Lenten Calendar would have been a good one to do – next year perhaps.)

Liturgy

Good progress on this one so far.  Mary holding meeting soon.

Craft club idea – Linda

I saw someone from the craft group this morning.  They have had an idea of making a booklet of "household hints" using natural products so that aerosols and chemical products might not been needed.  They think the booklet could be sold to parishioners.  I think it is a good idea, and the group do seem to be very keen to be involved in the Livesimply initiative.  I said I would report back to you and you might discuss it with the main group at the next meeting.

Live Sustainably

Forest School

Julian was to talk to the school.

Walking to Mass weekend

Have suggested to Stuart Cosgrave that this could be something the Scouts (Guides as well perhaps) could organise with our help.

I found a supplier of round blank labels.

Eco-friendly hall refurb

Tree planting

We are ready to go and need to think about launching our scheme.  Julian was to buy a tree and give me the text for his certificate.

Recycling/waste management/cleaning materials

Susan Lams unable to take this on after all but I think we should put it on the shelf for much later.

Rainbows and Brownies

On hold for next Autumn and the Garden

Foodbank and Manna Centre

Fr Bryan has obtained agreement from the other churches taking part in this year’s choral concert to donate the proceeds to the Foodbank.  Manna Centre collection of clothes next weekend.

Housebound idea from Linda

Reading through the notes you sent makes clear what a lot we are working to achieve. It is a great start and will I know gain momentum as we proceed and the group becomes more "visable". I am still trying to think of ways to include the elderly and housebound. If we make a pack with a letter of explanation of the scheme, leaflets we are producing, diary of events with offers of lifts, the Livesimply prayer and maybe details of the tree planting scheme (would be great as gifts for those who find shopping difficult) and distribute them through those who are already visiting this group we could feel we have at least made an initial contact.  I would be happy to make the packs. Let me know what you think.

I think you've got a really good idea here. By the 9/10th Feb or soon after, there will be quite a lot of things you could include. I have several names of people we could send them to via the visitors (mainly to the home communicants but I'm sure CWL and KSC will have other names). It will be important to stress in the letter that we are sending these as a way of saying "you aren't forgotten" and not any other reason.
