A warm welcome to Mass this weekend (Remembrance) and especially to : -

At 6.0.pm (Sat) the Knights of St. Columba (council 327) who will be remembering departed knights;

At 10.00am – Deacon Duncan Aitkins (preacher);

At 11.30am – Our uniformed organisations for Parade Mass.(remembering our Queen’s Scouts (4) who will be at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.)

As we remember and pray for the dead of the two world wars of the 20th century, we remember also all who have died in war, including the wars which continue to ravage our planet. Most of us have no experience of living through a war, although some of you still have vivid memories of 1939-45, and some of you have relatives in the armed forces abroad.

Perhaps the only real antidote to war is the peace that Jesus Christ offers –a radically different thing to the mere absence of war- and which is something that can only be received as gift.  It is nothing less than the love of God himself, a love which (as we know from the cross) is costly, sacrificial. When we are secure in love, we have no need to fight – and that goes for individuals as well as nations- for you, and for me. Let us learn the lessons of the past (how easy to say it!)

‘For us they live till life itself shall end,

 The frailties and the follies of those years,

 Their strength which pride of loss could lend,

 Their vanished hopes, their sorrows and their tears;

  But slowly towards the verge the dim sky clears,

  For nobler men may yet redeem our clay

  When we and war together, one wise day,

  Have passed away.’

 (Vera Brittain  The Testament of Youth)

Today – second collection for the Archbishop’s Administration Fund.

Welcome to visitors and newcomers! Do come in for coffee after Mass in the adjoining hall- and please fill in a parish registration form (available in porch.)

 (No Childrens’ Liturgy today (10.00am) as it is the 2nd Sun. in the month.)

This evening Face to Face  Catholic journalist Clifford Longley in conversation with Rev.Paul Hulme at the Methodist Church (6.30pm – for exactly an hour.) Many of you will be familiar with Clifford’s articles.  He has had a long and distinguished career as religious affairs editor of both the Times and the Telegraph and also contributes to the Tablet. I do hope there will be good representation from St. James’ (and, indeed, from all the churches.) You can be assured of a warm welcome!

Tuesday – Parish Forum at 8.0.pm (for the whole parish).

There are four purposes to this meeting:

a)     To receive our financial statement for year ending December 31st 2006  (please take your copy from porch.) I am sorry this is so late- our 2007 statement will be presented in February 2008.

b)     To receive brief reports from group leaders about parish activities over

the past year (inc. deanery and diocese.)

c)     To answer any questions about the parish, from the floor.

        d).   Towards a Vision: Fr. Bryan to outline and share his vision for 2008.

Could I please ask that as many people as possible come to the forum which is one of the few occasions that we get together as a whole parish. If there is a particular topic you would like addressed, please let Fr. Bryan know by Monday 6.0.pm. We anticipate that the forum will end at 9.30pm.

Next Saturday (17th) Flower arranging workshop at 10.00am. We need more flower arrangers but help will be given by Betty and Bridie. I do hope a good number turn up. Please let Betty know if you are coming and bring secateurs.

Also next Saturday –Casino Theme Night (Scouts), 7.30.pm. Money raised will go to the scout group. Please support ! (poster in porch.)

Saturday November 24th – CWL ‘Military Whist Drive’ (£6, poster in porch-tickets from Jo Corteen or Sheila Barradell.

Have a peaceful week.
