Święconka (Shvyen-tson-kah)
Holy Saturday 2014
The blessing of the Easter baskets, or the Święconka is a tradition dear to the heart of every Pole. The food is brought to the church in a basket, traditionally lined with white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood, and blessed by the parish priest on Holy Saturday.
The strength of this tradition was highlighted by the fact that around 200 people attended the first Święconka held at St James' on Saturday 19th April! The organisers were caught by surprise and had to add extra tables to accommodate everyone, including many visitors from nearby parishes. It was good to see many of our own, non-Polish, parishioners joining in this colourful occasion. Now for next year!
