Leave the Car at Home (Not at Church) Day, 2009
European Mobility Week (16th-22nd) inspired the St James' Justice & Peace Group to propose that going to church on 19/20th should be done without a car if possible. Fr Bryan encouraged the congregation in his previous week's homily about Justice and the need to conserve the planet's resources. We also had our new bike racks to make use of, these having been recently supplied by Bromley Council's Sustainable Travel group. Other events including the London Skyride and Christian Ecology Link's promotion of churches Car Free Sunday meant that St James' had to do its bit for the environment! There were plenty of ideas on the website and on leaflets handed out by the youth and uniformed groups on the previous weekend. We were also inspired by the presence of Fr Joseph Udoh from the St Patrick's Missionary Society, reminding us that children in many parts of Africa may not see a car except for his when he travels to say Mass. Not everyone was able to take a full part in this community event, but we did have a lot of enthusiastic parents and children who helped to make the event worthwhile and good fun, as shown in the pictures below.
